Chat with Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator Chris Ball.

Moderator: Good morning Cougar fans and thank you for visiting WSUCougars.com and spending part of you Monday with us for today's chat with Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator Chris Ball. The Cougars open the 2009 season at home against Stanford this Saturday at 3 p.m. Please click HERE for 2009 ticket information. Chris, thank you for joining us today and let's get right to questions.

John (Mill Creek): Coach Ball--good luck this season. As you recruit high school athletes to play in the secondary for the cougs what are a couple of the skills that you really look for.
Chris Ball: John, thank you for the question. I look for speed, footwork, if he is physical, and ball skills.

Jerry (Everett): What are the differences you look at in deciding if a player is going to play corner or safety for you?
Chris Ball: Jerry, I like to have four-corner types in the secondary. Corners have to have quicker feet. Safeties have got to be physical.

Dave (snohomish): Which player has made the most progress since you took over from last spring practice to now. Really like how the coaching staff is going about the improvement of the program.
Chris Ball: Dave, thank you for the comment. LeAndre Daniels. He's had a great camp.

Don (Everett): What type of defensive system do you prefer? (Zone or Man or combo) Good luck against Stanford.
Chris Ball: Don, thank you for the question and your comment. There is a place for both.

David (Mill Creek): What type of offense does Stanford use and what do we need to do to control Gerhart?
Chris Ball: David, they are a running offense. As for Gerhart we need to be physical and tackle.

Don Wilson, Cranbrook B.C.: Are you going to play Andy Mattingly at linebacker this season?
Chris Ball: Don, yes we will.

Bruce (Virginia Beach): Coach - I looked at last season as an investment in our future with so many players redshirted. Are those who redshirted now ready to contribute in the PAC-10? Who are the younger players who stand out? GO COUGS!
Chris Ball: Bruce, LeAndre Daniels, Daniel Simmons, Dainel Spitz, and Alex Hoffman are ready to contribute. The younger players who stand out include Travis Long and Darren Markle.

MIKE: WHAT IS THE IDEAL SIZE FOR A DT?
Chris Ball: Mike, we are much better at the defensive tackle position. Ideally, they have to be around 300 pounds and athletic.

MIKE (LA): DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH ROTATION FOR THE DL? WILL YOU KEEP THE 4-3 OR WILL SITUATIONS DICTATE A 4-3 VS A 3-4
Chris Ball: We do have enough for rotation unless injuries dictate otherwise. Situations will dictate a 4-3 or a 3-4.
Moderator: Okay, that's all the time we have. Chris, thank you for joining us today.
Chris Ball: Thank you for having me. We need a packed stadium for Stanford this Saturday and take advantage of our home field.
