Chat live with Head Football Coach Paul Wulff on the upcoming 2009 season.
| Moderator: Good afternoon Cougar fans and thank you for visiting wsucougars.com and spending your lunch hour with us and today's chat with WSU Head Football Coach Paul Wulff. Before we begin, you will notice there is a "Football Ticket Information" link at the top of this page. Please click on that link for 2009 ticket information. Paul, thank you for joining us today. We have a lot of questions for you so let's get right to it. |
| overland park kansas: how do you think your team will improve from last season? how many games can your team win this season?
do you see your team being competetive in the pac 10 |
Paul Wulff: I think our team will improve in a number of ways. On defense, offense and special teams, we will be better. In terms of wins, I've never predicted wins but I do think we will be a very competitive football team. |
| Don Wilson, Cranbrook B.C.: How do you see Johnny Forzani fitting into the Coug's lineup this year? |
Paul Wulff: Don, Johnny has raw talent. He has to continue to work very hard and recover from his foot surgery. Gaining experience is critical for him having a big impact on our team. |
| John (Everett): coach Wulff--which incoming freshmen have you decided to grayshirt and what is the status of Brandon Rankin. Good luck this year. |
Paul Wulff: John, at this point Quashan Buckley and Chris Mastin are on the grayshirt track and Brandon Rankin we hope will be in school in January. |
| Charlotte, NC: Coach,
What is the single biggest difference you are hoping for coming out of fall practice compared to last season?
Thanks,
Mark |
Paul Wulff: Toughness |
| Pullman: What would it take to make it on to the Football team if one was to try and walk on? |
Paul Wulff: Have the physical and mental make-up that we feel would help us compete in the Pac-10. |
| Brian: Can we expect Arthur Burns to have an impact in 2009, coach? |
Paul Wulff: We have veteran players returning at the position, but once again, you never know. |
| Craig (Queen Creek, AZ): When I was a student in Pullman it seems to me we played more night games (even one or two midweek) Any thought to more night games? ASU on a rainy night in October seems like a good idea... |
Paul Wulff: Craig, the Pac-10 is discussing more flexible times in our start times and days of games as we speak. |
| Dominic (Iowa City, IA): Coming from the Big Sky to the Pac-10 how big was the learning curve? And are there things that you and the staff are more prepared for this time around? |
Paul Wulff: Every year as a coach you learn more; however, there has not been necessarily a learning curve on our philosophy and how we coach and will coach. Learning who our players are and getting to know them is the biggest challenge we have faced in the first year. Heading into this year we have a better understanding of who our players are. |
| Seattle: Not much depth in the D-line and lot of youngsters, but spring ball revealed alot of good players amongst them. What do u expect from your D-line? |
Paul Wulff: Losing Cory MacKay is a big blow to our young D-line, but we do expect them to be much improved and more physical than last year. |
| Curious in Colfax: Coach, where was your favorite hangout as a student athlete at WSU? |
Paul Wulff: I found myself in Rusty's a few times. |
| Bruce (Pullman): Coach, I wouldn't have pegged you for being the fashionable type, but the new uniforms are great. Can you give some insight into how you and the the athletics department worked with NIKE on coming up with the look? |
Paul Wulff: Bruce, I'm somewhat fashionable. NIKE and our staff agreed to keep something consistent and traditional to Washington State. NIKE presented three different style options. Between the equipment staff, myself, and a few administrators, everyone agreed on this style and look. |
| Tim (Everett): Coach- I've heard you talk about this years team being young. Curious if you have any JC transfers coming in or if you are looking to build from within? If you do have any JC's coming in, any that we should watch for? |
Paul Wulff: Tim, we plan to continue to build from within; yet, we will occasionally bring in a junior college player. |
| Jake (Hermosa Beach): We didn't really get to see your offense last season, so what can we look forward to and what players do you see making an impact? |
Paul Wulff: Jake, you should look forward to us running our no-huddle but varying operational times with the snap. |
| Derek from Bellingham: What are your goals you hope this team can reach this season? |
Paul Wulff: Derek, we hope to be tougher, more competitive, and by season's end, find ourselves in a bowl game. |
| Anna (Richland): Coach Wulff, who would win a wrestling match between yourself and Robbie Tobeck? |
Paul Wulff: I haven't thought much about it. Robbie's younger and stronger so probably him. |
| Moderator: Okay that's all the time we have today. Paul thank you for joining us. |
Paul Wulff: Thank you for having me. As we build Cougar Football back, these are the times when we can make a lot of strides in the right direction. We need season tickets bought and we really need the Stanford game sold out to help us win that ball game. Go Cougs! |
