| Moderator: Good morning Cougar fans and welcome to today's chat with Washington State University Director of Athletics Bill Moos. |
Bill Moos: Hello Cougars! I've been looking forward to this opportunity to visit with you. I'm looking forward to the upcoming academic year and the excitement of Cougar Athletic competition, which is about to be upon us. |
| Moderator: Thank you Bill. Let's begin answering questions. |
| Bruce (Virginia Beach): Assume I haven't been on campus in a number of years (1981,but who's counting?)...what is your number one message to me about our Athletic Department? AND...what do you think will bring me back more frequently? |
Bill Moos: Bruce, Cougar Athletics has enjoyed moments of glory and many memorable accomplishments. We have, however, lacked consistency and indeed that is where the focus lies. We need to be able to attract quality talent that will in turn provide us with a program that hopefully will be competitive year in and year out and in doing so, will energize our fan base. |
| Aaron (Seattle): Will there be any rebranding work done to Martin Stadium before this season? |
Bill Moos: Aaron, this fall our fans will notice substantial improvements in the branding of our facilities, most notably the interior and exterior of Bohler Gym. But not Martin Stadium as the branding of that facility will be in conjunction with the planned stadium renovation and the construction of the football operations building. |
| Gerry Child (Olympia): Hi Bill,
With the athletic department's improving financial position, are there any plans to add any varsity sports? How about woman's softball? |
Bill Moos: Gerry, the plan at this time is to focus on the sports program that we currently offer and ensuring they are healthy and in a position to compete in the Pac-12 Conference. That does not eliminate the prospect of new programs being added in the future but I believe that would be a ways away. |
| Joe (Pullman): What are your personal expectations for our football program this season? Are you looking forward to the growth, or the wins? |
Bill Moos: Joe, yes, I am looking forward to both. I feel that Cougar Football is in a position now to not only compete week in and week out but also to secure victories that hopefully will put us in a position to be playing in the postseason. |
| Reggie (Tacoma): Bill,
Are there plans to add a real like grandstand or structure (i.e. press box, concessions, restrooms, etc)to the WSU soccer facility? I think it would be nice to see for our soccer student-athletes and coaches in the foreseeable future. |
Bill Moos: Reggie, improved soccer facilities are included in our master plan and will hopefully be realized sooner than later. |
| Ron Thomas; Vancouver, WA: Looking forward to Hall of Fame Dinner in Spokane on 9 September. Mention this in your talk |
Bill Moos: Ron, we have selected an outstanding class of hall of fame inductees to be honored this fall. More information will be available in the very near future. |
| James(Seattle): Bill, I saw Butch a few weeks ago and his fur and face looked too worn, is he going to be updated like the rest of the uniforms? |
Bill Moos: James, it's important that Butch looks his best. I will make sure that we are looking into his health and well being! |
| Bryan(Spokane): Will students be receiving the discounted tickets to the Apple Cup at reasonable prices even with it being at CenturyLink Field? |
Bill Moos: Bryan, ticket prices for this year's Apple Cup will be determined by the University of Washington as it is their home game despite being at CenturyLink Field. |
| Lisa (Seattle): What are Tom Jaeger's coaching accomplishments? It is unusual that only his Olympic accomplishments were apart of his coaching bio. |
Bill Moos: Lisa, Tom's accomplishments as both an athlete and a coach were impressive enough for me to feel that not only would he be a good fit at Washington State but that he can achieve great success. |
| Dan (Seattle): Bill, how will the new Pac-12 television revenue impact attracting talent to the Palouse, both athletes and coaches? |
Bill Moos: Dan, it's important that the new income realized by the Pac-12 television agreement be invested in the future of our program. A big piece of the investment will be in facilities but other areas as well, such as coaches' salaries and recruiting budgets, which also need to be addressed. These investments will give us the ability to attract top talent and provide an element of stability with Cougar Athletics. |
| TK(Coeur d'Alene): You have recently completed the rebranding of the basketball practice facility. Will the same type of rebranding be done to Beasley, Bohler and the other facilities this year? Any updates on the Martin project? |
Bill Moos: TK, our branding efforts our continuing at a fast pace. Bohler Gym should be close to completed by this fall. We also plan to have a rebrand of Beasley in place prior to our first home basketball game. The branding of Martin Stadium will be part of the planned renovation project. |
| Danny (Mountain View, CA): When can we start seeing online streaming of Pac 12 athletics? Would love to see a Google/Pac 12 partnership. |
Bill Moos: Danny, I'm looking forward to seeing all Pac-12 football games being televised live beginning with the 2012 season. We do stream many Cougar Athletics events live at WSUCougars.com. Please check the website throughout the year for the broadcast schedule. |
| Trevor (Kent): In the past the cougars would play rivalry games against the Idaho Vandals. Do you believe this semi-annual rivalry can be renewed? |
Bill Moos: Trevor, we are currently having conversations with the folks at Idaho. Though not on a yearly basis, I do feel that the Battle of the Palouse should continue to be a rivalry for Cougar Football. |
| Aaron (Seattle): When will rebranded gear be available? |
Bill Moos: Aaron, it's my understanding that jerseys and other gameday apparel are being distributed to retailers at this time. So be on the lookout! |
| Track Fan (Pullman): Will Mooberry track be resurfaced anytime soon? |
Bill Moos: Yes. The plan is for it to be resurfaced within the next two years. |
| Scott (Seattle): Bill, have there been any discussions abotu doing football series with Virginia Tech? They have a large and active Alumni base in the Seattle area, they have shown a willingness to play anyone anytime and it would be great to play a series with an ACC school. |
Bill Moos: Scott, it is my intent to schedule BCS intersectional games on a home-and-home basis with our home games being played in Pullman. Though it appears that we have those type of games in place for the next 10 years, we will make overtures to the people at Virginia Tech to gauge their interest. |
| Joe (Des Moines): Bill, this may sound like an off-the-wall question, but are there any plans to bring inter-collegiate athletics to the WSU branches, such as WSU-Vancouver? |
Bill Moos: Joe, we have and will continue to stage events in Tri-Cities, Spokane and the Portland/Vancouver area. We will look at competitions and scrimmages in these areas when we feel it best suits the needs of our program. |
| Moderator: Okay, that's all the time we have. Bill, thank you for joining us once again. |
Bill Moos: I enjoyed this time with my fellow Cougars and hope to see all of you on campus this fall. Go Cougs! |
| Moderator: Thank you to everyone for your questions. Sorry we could not get to all of them. Please join us next week for chats with Matt Potter, Paul Wulff and Jen Greeny. Go Cougs! |
