Meet recently appointed head volleyball coach Andrew Palileo and hear his thoughts on the upcoming season of WSU women's volleyball!
Moderator: Good morning and thank you for visiting wsucougars.com for today's online chat with Washington State Volleyball Head Coach Andrew Palileo. Coach Palileo, welcome to WSU and thank you for joining us this morning.
Andrew Palileo: Thank you. I'm really excited to be here. I am looking forward to the upcoming season and getting started.
Moderator: Okay, let's get to some questions.

Des Moines, WA: What is the status of the 2008 recruits - have they been released from their NLI as rumored or are they staying at WSU?
Andrew Palileo: Since being hired, I have been in contact with all of the 2008 recruits. I've had a good time speaking with them and getting to know them as student-athletes. It is my intention to have all four signed student-athletes here for the 2008 season.

Seattle: How are you going to meet the challenge of the PAC-10 and recruit quality student-athletes to WSU? Also what qualities do you have as a recruiter that will insure success of the program?
Andrew Palileo: The formula for my past success has been about recruiting quality student-athletes that fit the program I am recruiting for. The Pac-10 is obviously going to be a challenge, but I think that there are student-athletes out there that will fit well into the mission of WSU as well as the system that we will be implementing at the start of the 2008 season. As a recruiter, you want to sell your best asset, which in my case would be the quality of student-athletes we recruit, the character and integrity of the student-athletes we recruit, and last, but certainly not the least, we go after great volleyball players. I am confident that WSU provides these opportunities for our student-athletes across the country.

Mela, Honolulu: Congratulations, Coach. I am a 1968 WSU graduate from Hawaii and I am proud that you are from the Islands. Are you planning to recruit the many fine wahine volleyball players from our high schools? Best wishes.
Andrew Palileo: It's exciting to go from a 1986 graduate of Waipahu High School to now be the head volleyball coach of a Pac-10 University at Washington State. Over the last several years, I have been recruiting in the islands while at South Dakota State and have made some great contacts with club coaches in the area. I was fortunate to get a recruit to come to South Dakota State and hope that the relationships that I have made throughout the years at home will benefit me here at Washington State University.

Jeremy (Philadelphia): Welcome aboard coach. What similiarities, if any, do you see between the challenges at WSU and the challenge of taking SDSU from D2 to D1?
Andrew Palileo: Regardless of where I am at, I have always had to recruit the level of student-athletes that are required for the conference I am competing in. Finding the right student-athletes for this level requires athleticism, good volleyball IQ, and a high level of self-motivation to want to excel at the highest level.

Steve (Selah): Coach, welcome to Washington State. What drew you to Pullman and WSU?
Andrew Palileo: I think the greatest asset that Pullman provides is a community that supports the University, an atmosphere of family, and the great people in this area. It is a unique environment in the Pac-10, which I certainly will take advantage of in the recruiting process.

Linda (Bothel): Coach, I've heard you reference the system that you run. Can you please describe what that is?
Andrew Palileo: It is a system built around speed and the middle's ability to be available no matter where the setter is. This way, it creates a one-on-one situation for the outside hitters the majority of the time. Our players have to learn the nuisances and the adjustments and spacing that are required once the ball is in play. I hope we can implement it by the start of the 2008 non-conference season.
Moderator: Okay, that's all the time we have. Thank you coach for joining us today.
Andrew Palileo: Thank you. I look forward to chatting with Cougar fans in the near future and to answer all of your questions about this great game of volleyball.
