Chat with Washington State football head coach Paul Wulff on Signing Day, Wednesday, February 2 at 11:30 a.m. PT.
| Moderator: Good morning Cougar Nation! Thank you for visiting WSUCougars.com and today's Signing Day chat with Paul Wulff. Coach, thank you for joining us. |
Paul Wulff: Thank you for having me. It's an exciting day for Cougar Football! |
| Moderator: We have a lot of questions submitted so let's get right to it. |
| Eric (Spokane): While there is no offical commits coming out of Spokane, is there any offical walk-ons from the area? |
Paul Wulff: Eric, we do have some official walk-ons coming out of Spokane but I cannot comment on them just yet. |
| Ty (Pullman): Is there any guys switching from football to another sport, or coming from another sport to football? Such as Jeshua Anderson did with track. |
Paul Wulff: Ty, at this point, we don't have anybody that could be switching sports other than the Sealby brothers who are currently participating in track. |
| Bob (Kennewick): Seems like Internet recruiting sites are getting injecting themselves as a player in the recruiting process, rather than a media outlet. Can you talk about how Internet recruiting sites affect the overall recruiting process? |
Paul Wulff: Bob, I'm not sure how the internet affects the recruiting process. Also, I am not a big fan of the internet in recruiting. |
| Cannon Fletcher, St Louis: Who from this class will allow WSU to continue to build on the strong finish of 2010? Specifically, who is filling gaps and who may possibly be an 'upgrade' over the current level of play at a particular position. |
Paul Wulff: Cannon, our hope is that Ian Knight, Lenard Williams, Matt Goetz and Taylor Meighen can provide some stability in our offensive and defensive lines. |
| Ryan, Everett, WA: Simple question... Whats the goal of the program this year coach? |
Paul Wulff: Ryan, to continue to take positive steps and grow in ALL aspects of our program. |
| Tate (Los Angeles): How do you feel the recruiting in California is going and is this state a top priority for you? |
Paul Wulff: Tate, we feel our recruiting in California is getting better each year. Like the state of Washington, California is a primary focus for us. |
| Joel/boise: Are there any kids in this class who you think can contribute this fall or are you expecting to redshirt most of this class? |
Paul Wulff: Joel, roughly between 2-4 freshman will play. The hope is that all other freshman will redshirt. |
| Omar (Carlsbad): How many recruits are expected to sign? |
Paul Wulff: Omar, we are hoping to sign between 26 to 28. |
| Jeff (Phoenix): How important is it to recruit in your home state? |
Paul Wulff: Jeff, recruiting in Washington has been and will always be a priority for us. |
| Mike (Seattle): Do you see Matt Goetz playing OL or DL in college? |
Paul Wulff: O-line |
| Rob (Tuscon): How much negative recruiting really goes on between other coaches? |
Paul Wulff: Rob, unfortunately more than we would all like to see. |
| Doug from Mt. Vernon: Can we please use our TE's now for passing since you have loaded up with linemen? |
Paul Wulff: Doug, we would love to use tight ends but we need them to produce when the opportunity is available to them. |
| Ryan (Walla Wala): Do you think Cody Clements will redshirt his first year? How good can he be? |
Paul Wulff: Ryan, yes we plan on redshirting Cody. But we also think he could be one of the hidden gems in this class. |
| Joe (Chicago): You grabbed a couple of Florida recruits this year. Is that a place of emphasis for you? |
Paul Wulff: Joe, we plan on having a small niche in Florida and hope to continue to that. |
| Mike (Mercer Island): Do you typically stay away from the Seattle area knowing it's hard to get kids away from UW? |
Paul Wulff: Mike, no we recruit all areas of the state and we do our best to recruit kids that will fit our program. |
| Bruce (Virginia Beach): To quote Coach Walden...didn't get everybody we wanted, but wanted everybody we got? Looks like a good class. How many are likely to play next fall? Go Cougs! |
Paul Wulff: Bruce, including JC players we could have 8-10 kids playing for us this fall. |
| Dan (Seattle): Excellent work today, Coach. How much of a disappointment is it to lose recruits in the final week? |
Paul Wulff: Dan, thank you. It's disappointing but it never breaks your class. |
| Dave (Portland): Tell me about Brock Lutes. Where does he project in college? |
Paul Wulff: Dave, we project Brock to be a linebacker/tight end. |
| Matt (Seattle): Excited to see Sua commit. Acknowledging that things can change and that it's early, any thoughts on whether he is likely to wind up at RB or LB? |
Paul Wulff: Matt, the plan is to play him at linebacker. |
| Luke (Oakland): Hi Coach, thanks for taking the time to chat during such a busy day. How's Galvin looking to start the year? Will his arm be back to 100%? |
Paul Wulff: Luke, Ricky looks good and he should be 100 percent. |
| TopCoug (Livermore, CA): Tell us about your QB, WSU Cody Clements, 6-0, 196lb, QB from Cali. He seems to be in the Jeff Tuel mold. Small ... |
Paul Wulff: Actually, Cody is 6-2, 205 pounds. He gives us great competitiveness. |
| Gary in Wenatchee: what is your feeling on the running back(s) for next year? I only see one recruited/committed so far. |
Paul Wulff: Gary, we feel we have enough experience and depth to have a competitive group. |
| ed bartlett: super excited about Logan Mayes, i wonder if dad is happy with him playing defense |
Paul Wulff: Ed, his dad really likes him at defense. |
| Cole(Vancouver): How do you feel the overall class compares to last years class? |
Paul Wulff: Cole, not as flashy looking on paper but will be as productive as any class that we've had. There are a lot of key lineman in this class. |
| Scott (Seattle): Coach Wulff, do us Cougar fans have reason to be excited about the incoming recruit class this year? |
Paul Wulff: Scott, people should be excited about every class but to expect this class to have an impact this year is unrealistic. This is the case for any school at this level. Once again, it takes TIME for the recruit to be able to contribute week-end and week-out in college football. |
| Moderator: Okay, that's all the time we have. Paul thank you for joining us once again. |
Paul Wulff: Thank you for having me. This is our third high-quality class that we have put together. I could not thank our assistant coaches and staff enough for all of the hard work that goes into recruiting. Coach Rasmussen does a great job structuring our recruiting plan and everyone does a great job executing it. As we start to put next year's class together, it is vital for the future of Cougar Football to continue to stack quality kids and talent together. |
| Moderator: Thank you to everyone for your question. We had nearly 200 submitted. I'm sorry we could not get to all of them. Please check back to WSUCougars.com for future online chats. Go Cougs! |
