Football Practice: Tuel TD Passes, Big Hits

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Saturday saw the Cougars practice for just under two hours in full pads at Rogers Field...there was a welcomed sight to the start of today's practice as one of the first players out on the practice field this morning was cornerback Nolan Washington who had missed most of the week after tweaking his right hamstring, good to have one of team leaders and most entertaining Cougs back on to the field...we will also note that offensive lineman B.J. Guerra and defensive end Travis Long have been two of the first players out to practice each day throughout the fall camp, often leading the position warmups...

Practice opened with a couple segments of special teams before breaking off for a couple segments with individual position coaches...today's team session focused primarily on red zone offense, with specific third down plays that either resulted in a first down or a field goal attempt...Andrew Furney took most of the kicks, having a 51-yarder blocked but came back to hit from 47 and 43 yards...Alex Gauper later connected from 37 and 24 yards out...the opening plays of the team session were a little sluggish on both sides of the ball but things picked up when the coaches let the Cougs play "live" which resulted in a couple big hits...linebacker Darryl Monroe put a big hit on running back Carl Winston who caught a pass in the flat, linebacker C.J. Mizell later popped wideout Marquess Wilson pretty good and fullback Jared Byers caught a pass and provided the loudest smack of the day when he and safety Deone Bucannon met near the goal line, bringing a number of yells from players on both sides of the ball...Jeff Tuel had the No. 1 offense looking sharp, throwing touchdown passes to tight end Andrei Lintz, wideout Jared Karstetter, Wilson and to wideout Bobby Ratliff...following practice, Karstetter and Wilson had a photoshoot with a photographer from the Seattle Times, so fans be on the lookout for the feature on the Cougar wideouts in the coming days...later today the players will take part in Pullman's Lentil Festival parade, we will have photos of the event...no afternoon practice today, just an single workout Sunday at 8:30 p.m. before a day off Monday, the first day of school...GO COUGS!
