The Cougars returned to practice today, working out for two hours in full pads at Rogers Field after taking Monday off to focus on the first day of school...
The first segment saw Andrew Furney and Alex Gauper go
through kicking extra points before the next couple segments focused on kickoff
and punt coverage...following a couple individual sessions, the Cougs matched up
in a third down drill, that saw the team go 11-vs.-11...defensive tackle Chas
Sampson highlighted the drill, blowing up a running play and later picking up a
sack...the defense played with most energy throughout the day, battling back to "win"
the day despite allowing a couple long completions from Jeff Tuel to Isiah
Barton and Jared Karstetter...linebacker Sekope Kaufusi turned in the play of the
day, perhaps the play of fall camp, leaping high to pick off a Connor Halliday
pass, causing all of the defensive players to storm the field and celebrate
with Kaufusi...the defense continued its strong day in a red zone drill as safety
Casey Locker intercepted a Jeff Tuel pass and defensive end Travis Long later
blew up a run play, meeting the running back a couple yards in the backfield...Long
later added a "sack"...Cougar men's basketball coach Ken Bone and head baseball
coach Donnie Marbut both made appearances at practice for a little bit...the
Cougs will work out at 3:45 p.m. again tomorrow before scrimmaging in Martin
Stadium Thursday at 7:30 p.m....GO COUGS!
