Washington State University's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) collected donations for flood relief in Australia at the last two men's basketball games against Stanford and California, Feb. 10 and 12. The idea came about from WSU men's basketball sophomore Brock Motum, a native of Brisbane, Australia.
The group collected $700 that will go to help rebuild courts at Brisbane's Auchenflower Basketball Stadium. The stadium was damaged in the recent flood and the Brisbane Basketball Inc. (BBI) group estimates it costing anywhere from $550,000 to $750,000 to rebuild.
Growing up in Brisbane, Motum spent his summers shooting hoops at Auchenflower, a four-court stadium that hosts many club games.
"I wanted to help knowing that if I were these kids' ages again I wouldn't be happy with damaged facilities," Motum said. "I just wanted to help make those kids back in Brisbane happy. It was good WSU came together to help a cause in need".
The estimated overall damage from the flood exceeds $1.5 billion and includes homes, farms and surrounding communities in Australia.
