Washington State men's basketball junior Klay Thompson was named the 43rd-best player in the country by Rivals.com recently. Rivals.com, a part of Yahoo Sports, is counting down the top 50 players in the nation for 2010-11. The top player will be unveiled Nov. 7, the day before the season begins. According to the website, " 'Top' doesn't necessarily mean the most pro potential or even the most talent. Rather, it's a combination of what the player has accomplished and how we think the player will do this season. But production does trump potential." Check it out HERE.
Thompson continues to rack up preseason honors as he enters his third season with the Cougars as the team's 29th career scorer with 1,023 career points. If Thompson scores what he scored last season (19.6 points per game), he can become the school's third-best all-time leading scorer by the end of the season (1632 points).

We have a name for the new Cougar Football tradition established two weeks ago!
What was previously known as the "Cougar Pride Walk," will now forever be known as "Cougar Prowl." Congratulations to Dave Teitzel, who was among 24 fans who submitted "Cougar Prowl" in the Name the Team Walk contest. Teitzel was randomly selected by Butch T. Cougar as the winner of a football autographed by the WSU Football team. More than 100 people submitted ideas, and a committee consisting of athletic department staff and football representatives chose "Cougar Prowl" as the name for the team walk. "Cougar Prowl" will begin Saturday at 9:45 a.m. at the Cougar Pride statue, located next to the WSU Athletics Ticket Office on Stadium Way. The Cougar football players and coaches, the WSU marching band and spirit squad, and Butch walk from the Cougar Pride Statue to the Hollingbery Fieldhouse. Thank you to everyone who participated in the contest. Go Cougs!
Yesterday's rain didn't dampen the turnout, including by WSU student-athletes, for the National Hazing Prevention Week "Walk of Remembrance," a silent march to honor the victim of hazing. For more information on National Hazing Prevention Week and WSU Athletics involvement click HERE.

It was a full slate yesterday with podcasts as interviews with Athletics Director Bill Moos, Volleyball Coach Andrew Palileo, Soccer Coach Matt Potter, and Cross Country Coach Pete Julian were posted on the WSUCougars.com Podcast Network page.
Of note during his interview is that Moos recounts the 1972 Cougars' game vs. the Trojans, when Moos was a senior offensive tackle for WSU while his current USC AD counterpart Pat Haden was across the sidelines as member of the '72 USC team.
We have a video from Coach Wulff's press conference, notes from today's practice and an explanation from something I alluded to earlier after the jump:

Four members of the Washington State soccer team were named all-tournament at the Outriggers Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Hawai'i, Sept. 17-19. In addition, Emma Stolz was named Most Valuable Player in the tournament. A senior forward, Stolz scored three goals in two matches, including two game-winners, as Washington State captured the tournament title with victories over Hawai'i and Pepperdine. Selected to the all-tournament team were senior goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo, junior defender Ali Fenter, redshirt-senior midfielder Mallory Fox and sophomore defender Shannon McFadden.

I have a couple stories to pass along this morning:
First, Vince Grippi of the Spokesman Review has THIS STORY, stemming from Sunday's press conference with Coach Wulff, looking back at the SMU game. Also, Howie Stalwick had THIS FEATURE on Chima Nwachukwu in the Columbian last week. I missed it when it hit the wire, but it is a must-read. Have a wonderful Monday.
It is pretty early, but there will be plenty of time for a nap on this flight to Dallas. The Cougars are boarding the bus in the next 15 minutes or so, and then I'm guessing it will be a pretty quiet flight. We will head to the stadium as soon as we fly in for walk-thru.

A pair of Washington State University soccer student-athletes were named to the all-tournament team for their play at the Gonzaga Tournament in Spokane, Sept. 10/12. Freshman forward Micaela Castain and sophomore defender Mariah Cameron were each honored. Castain scored a goal in each of Washington State's two matches and has five goals in her last three matches.
Not a lot out there today, which is a shame. A few times a year I help Washington State host golf tournaments, and I end up spending way more time out here without hitting a single shot than I would like to. As I waited for scorecards, I was hoping to have a bit more to read.

A big thank you to all of the fans who came out and helped establish this tradition. The walk will take place every Cougar Football Saturday so don't miss out on this great new tradition at WSU.

Washington State freshman goalkeeper Gurveen Clair is training with the Canadian National Team. You can follow her experience here. By Gurveen Clair (Diary Day 14) Rome is a beautiful city! The buildings were both new and old. There were ruins in the middle of the city, statues and sculptures all over the place, so many people walking the streets. We drove past the Coliseum which we may get to see on our next outing, but even from an outside view, you could see the history; its worn down walls. We toured an area called the Vatican. It is walled off from the rest of Rome and contains a very famous church, St. Peters Church. The inside was absolutely gorgeous, designs on the roof and pillars, famous art pieces inside. The one rule to get into the church was you had to cover up. Your shirt must have sleeves and pants or shorts have to be at least knee length. They had a couple of guards standing around wearing the old fashioned suits which was interesting. After our tour we split up to wander the streets and do some shopping. The girls I was with wanted to have some real Italian gelatos so we went on a search. We found this tiny little cafe, and the gelato was delicious! I don't know what flavor I had because I couldn't read Italian. I just looked at it and if the presentation looked good through the glass, I tried it. We walked the streets some more, popping into shops here and there. This was a bit of a tourist location so a lot of things were overpriced, so really, not much shopping took place. We head out to town again, Thursday. More from Gurveen after the jump.

In the tradition of Cougars representing their countries, former Washington State basketball standout Aron Baynes recently competed for Australia at the 2010 World Championship in Turkey. Baynes was one of 12 members of the Boomers' squad, which finished third in Group A (Kayseri) and went 3-3 before falling to Slovenia in the Eight Finals. Baynes played in four of the team's six games, scoring a tournament-high four points against Angola (Sept. 5) in five minutes of action. He averaged 1.5 points and 1.2 rebounds a game, converting his only 3-point attempt.

In my weekly visit with Washington State Head Soccer Coach Matt Potter, the Cougar mentor had these thoughts about the program. (on last week) "We were disappointed with the outcome at BYU. To go a goal down against a very good team on the road in a challenging environment is tough for anybody. I was pleased that we found our way back into the game. To give up a goal later made it very difficult. (At Weber State), We disappointed to go a goal down. To come back and respond with four goals is a positive." (on Micaela Castain's hat trick at Weber State) "I am sure it was a relief for her. She has been in opportunties to score and it is the hardest thing to do in the game. She has been disappointed with herself and frustrated with herself. Hopefully, this leads to better days and more goals." More from Matt Potter after the jump.

Hey Coug Fans, While most people think of the Labor Day weekend as a chance to grill their favorite meal, reunite with family and relax, the Washington State women's swim team uses the long weekend to prepare for the upcoming season. Each Labor Day the Coug swimmers head to the Granite Point for the start of the Snake River Challenge. The student-athletes start at Granite Point, swim 2.2 miles to Wawawai Landing, then make the 2.2 mile run back to Granite Point.

Washington State freshman goalkeeper Gurveen Clair is training with the Canadian National Team. You can follow her journey here on the wsucougars.com blog. By Gurveen Clair So I thought taking a little break between write up would give me a little more time to do things worth writing about, and it worked. I've been here for a week now and it actually feels like it has been a month. The food is still the same, just new ways of cooking it. The heats cooled off...for now. The weather is actually so perfect for soccer so I can't complain. We had to do a lot of different kinds of tests over the week. Today our feet and posture were checked and the other day we had to send in urine tests for analysis. I hadn't done something like that since I was a little kid. In my weekly visit with Matt Potter, the Cougar head soccer coach has this to say about the state of his program and college soccer across the country. (on visiting Texas A&M last weekend) "We found out a lot of things that can help us going forward. We had the challenge of the environment and that is life on the road. That is not an excuse. That being said, we saw again what we can potentially do, but it wasn't consistent enough so we ended up on the losing end of two very close matches." (on Ariana Byrd's play) "Ariana Byrd had a fantastic game and should be applauded for her effort considering the circumstances." More from coach Potter after the jump.
