PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State University head football coach Mike Price confirmed Wednesday that Devard Darling, a wide receiver who played at Florida State last year as a true freshman, is on campus in anticipation of joining the Cougar team.

Darling, a 6-3 receiver from Austin High in Houston, Texas, played in four games last fall with the Seminoles, catching two passes for 36 yards and one touchdown.

"Devard was rated one of the best high school receivers in the nation two years ago and to say we are delighted he is transferring to Washington State would be an understatement," offered Price. "He is an outstanding young man who will be a great addition to our team. What has happened to Devard and his family is tragic."

Darling opted to transfer from Florida State after the school refused to clear him medically following the death of his identical twin brother Devaughn last February. Devaughn Darling, a linebacker at FSU who also played as a true freshman, died during off-season workouts and had been diagnosed with sickle cell trait.

"Two things must occur before Devard will join the team for workouts," Price said. "First, he must go through the admission process at WSU. Secondly, he must be cleared medically."

"In addition, we will submit an appeal to the NCAA asking that Devard be granted immediate eligibility at WSU, based on the unusual circumstances of his case," added Price.

Price indicated it could be several weeks before the entire process is completed.

"As each of the items is addressed and a resolution reached, we will announce the pertinent information," Price said.

"We are reviewing medical information about Devard that is available to us and we are determining what additional information is needed before we make a sound medical decision," offered Bill Drake, WSU's head athletic trainer.
