PULLMAN, Wash. -- More than 30 members of the 1965 Washington State University football team that earned the nickname Cardiac Kids for their dramatic late-game comebacks gathered Saturday at the Cougars' football game against Stanford.

Head coach Bert Clark's 1965 team finished 7-3 overall and 2-1 in AAWU play, with narrow victories over Iowa 7-0, Minnesota 14-13, Villanova 24-14, Indiana 8-7 and Oregon State 10-8. All three wins over Big Ten teams came on the road. WSU also had wins over Arizona 21-3 and Oregon 27-7. The three losses came to Idaho 17-13, Arizona State 7-6 and Washington 27-9.

Among the late-game victories were:
Iowa (7-0) - Tom Roth passed 20 yards to Rich Sheron with 36 seconds to play;

Minnesota (14-13) - Down 13-0, WSU came back to win with 2:12 left on the game clock when Roth scored from one yard out and Bill Gaskins kicked the extra point;

Villanova (24-14) - WSU trailed 14-10 when Roth hit Bob Simpson on a 78-yard pass play with 2:15 to play and Gaskins sealed the win a minute later with a 41-yard interception return for the final score;

Indiana (8-7) - The Cougars rallied from a 7-0 deficit when Roth and Doug Flansburg hooked up on a five-yard pass play as time expired; Roth then hit Ammon McWashington with a two-point conversion pass;

Oregon State (10-8) - WSU jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but it took a Gaskins interception late in the game to seal the win.

The 1965 roster included 57 players, with 26 returning for the reunion. In addition three coaches and two graduate assistant coaches returned for the gathering, which included a Friday night social in Spokane, a pre-game gathering on campus and the football game.
