Six Cougars Named All-Pacific-10 Academic

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore outfielder Brett Jacobs was named to the 2011 Pacific-10 Baseball Academic First Team, Thursday, highlighting six Cougar student-athletes recognized for the their efforts in the classroom.

Jacobs, in his first year of eligibility for the award, has a 3.42 GPA and an undeclared major. Other Cougars garnering accolades announced by Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott were junior outfielder Patrick Claussen, sophomore catcher Paul Clingan, sophomore left-handed pitcher Richie Ochoa and senior left-handed pitcher Paris Shewey on the second team as well as redshirt-senior Jay Ponciano receiving honorable mention.

Claussen is a math major and has a 3.39 GPA. It is his second award after being named first team in 2010. Clingan (3.29 GPA, psychology major) and Ochoa (3.17, sport management) each earned the honor is their first-year of eligibility. Shewey (3.34, management operations) was named to the second team for the second-straight season and Ponciano was honorable mention for the third-consecutive year.
