SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington State University's second varsity eight crew won the Women's Erickson Cascade Cup for the first time, Saturday, as part of the Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle. The Cougars outlasted Washington, Oregon State and UCLA en route to their third consecutive victory. WSU rowed a time of 6:34.25 in the 2000 meter race. Washington finished second with a time of 6:38.13, Oregon State came in at 6:48.73, and UCLA finished at 6:52.41 rounding out the competition.

The last time the Cougars' second varsity eight rowed in Seattle they were victorious as well, defeating Washington in a dual regatta on April 10. WSU's second varsity eight defeated Tennessee and Oregon State in last weekend's race at Wawawai landing.

"The second varsity eight got off to a slow start, but really picked it up the last 1500 meters. It was a really exciting race," said WSU Assistant Coach Janey Charlton. "Now we need to do some fine-tuning before we head to California for the Pac-10s."

The Huskies won the varsity four race, clocking a time of 7:25.50. Oregon State came in second at 7:36.05, while WSU rowed a time of 7:42.09 to take third.

WSU finished fourth out of five teams in women's open eight race. The Cougars boat for this particular race was comprised of varsity and novice rowers. Washington won the race with a time of 6:59.95. A mixed crew (rowers from Italy and UW) came in second, and Oregon State finished third. The Cougars finished at 7:07.34 and Washington's "B" boat came in at 7:12.16 to end the race.

In the novice eight race, the Huskies took first rowing by rowing a time of 6:41.94. Oregon State came in second, WSU finished third, UCLA finished fourth and Washington's "B" boat came in fifth to complete the novice race.

The varsity eight squad competed in an exhibition race in Victoria, B.C., Canada. WSU won the race with a time of 6:42.92 as combined crews from the University of Victoria and University of British Columbia took second (6:44.58) and third (7:01.13).

Cougars return to action May 16 for the Pac-10 Championships at Lake Natoma, Calif.
