Rancho Cordova, Calif. - Led by the Varsity four's best finish in nine years, the 16th-ranked WSU women's rowing team finished tied for fourth with No. 12 USC Sunday at the Pacific-10 Conference championships on Lake Natoma. WSU's Varsity four finished third in the final, which was that boat's best showing since winning the title in 1991.

No. 1 Washington won its ninth straight Pac-10 crown by sweeping all four races to score 72 points. No. 5 California was second with 61 points, followed by No. 15 Oregon State (51), No. 12 USC and No. 16 WSU (42), Stanford (26), UCLA (12) and Oregon (2).

The Cougars finished fourth in both the Junior Varsity and Novice eight finals and took fifth in the Varsity eight race. The fifth-place showing in the Varsity eight final was a modest improvement over last season's disappointing sixth-place finish, but WSU will have to wait until Tuesday to see if it was enough to earn a bid to the NCAA championships for the first time since 1996. The NCAA will extend 19 bids for the 2000 championships, which will be held May 26-28 in Camden, N.J.

In the Varsity four, California and Washington pulled ahead of the pack early, leaving WSU, Oregon State and UC Irvine to battle for third. The three boats were within two seconds of each other at the 1,000-meter mark, but from there, WSU eased away from the other two, beating Irvine by six seconds for third. Washington won the race in a time of 7:50.29, followed by California (7:53.20) and WSU (8:10.20). Gonzaga finished sixth in that race with a time of 8:23.00. WSU advanced to the finals by winning its morning preliminary heat by one second over OSU.

Things started well for the Novice eight after advancing to the finals with a two-second victory over UC Davis in the preliminaries, but in the finals, the Cougars could not keep pace after the first 500 and settled for a disappointing fourth-place finish. The Huskies won easily in a time of 7:08.10, followed by a surprising Oregon State squad at 7:28.60. California was five seconds behind the Beavers, while WSU was seven seconds back of the Golden Bears.

Coming in as the fifth seed, the Junior Varsity scull recorded a moral victory of sorts, beating Oregon State to finish fourth in a time of 7:46.00. The Huskies were easy victors again in a time of 7:25.70, followed by California (7:31.60) and USC (7:36.50).

In the day's closest race, Washington, with a time of 6:27.50, defeated Cal (6:29.60) by two seconds to win the Varsity eight. OSU surprised again by finishing third (6:39.79), followed by USC (6:43.10) and WSU (6:50.79).
