PULLMAN, Wash. - During an overcast Friday afternoon on the Snake River, the Washington State University novice women's rowing team raced informally against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. WSU launched two novice eights and competed against two Gonzaga novice eights.

In what was only the second race of the fall for the WSU novice team, the Cougars enjoyed near perfect water conditions in a head-style race against Gonzaga, covering a stretch of the Snake River approximately 4,000 meters (2.5 miles) long from Granite Point to Wawawai Landing.

The WSU A boat (coxswain - Karli Woo, Destry Seiler, Andrea Yoxsimer, Molly Culwell, Courtney Hammer, Erin Schuster, Sydney Ferryman, Marissa Dormaier, bow - Lauren Powell) completed the course in a time of 15 minutes (15:00), the faster of the two WSU eights. The WSU B boat (coxswain - Hannah Piazza, Myranda Bell, Alex Vaughn, Kelly Heagerty, Erin Manhardt, Krista Lizardi, Lindsey Stuart, Kjellsea Steffen, bow - Julian Monroe) followed the WSU A boat and finished the race in a time of 15:31.

Although the WSU crew posted slower times than the Gonzaga novice crew, novice coach Corrie McGrath felt that the race was a success. McGrath was pleased because the WSU boats rowed unfamiliar lineups, yet rowed the entire race by all eight in only their second race of the season.

The WSU novice crew held this informal race against the Gonzaga novice women because their respective varsity crews traveled to Portland this weekend. The Cougar varsity team will race in the Portland Loop Saturday morning and the Portland Fall Classic Sunday.
