SEATTLE - The Washington State women's vasity eight boat rowed to fifth place when fog lifted nearly three hours after racing was scheduled to start on the Montlake Cut Sunday morning.
The Cougs completed the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 43 seconds in what they feel was their best race of the fall season. The US National Team commanded a first-place finish of 16:23, California with a 16:59, Washinton's with an even 17:00, and the University of Victoria with a 17:20. Their performance led them to finish ahead of Oregon State's 17:45 time, a team who placed nationally last year.
WSU's second varsity eight also finished ahead of Oregon State with a time of 18:25, placing third behind Washington who finished the race first in 17:46 and the University of Victoria at 18:22.
"I was happy to beat Oregon State in the V8 considering they placed nationally last year?and to have the second varsity finish ahead of both OSU and Cal at this point is a good indicator of our progress this fall," Cougar Varsity Coach Tammy Crawford said. "Both of those programs have past NCAA experience motivating them right now, and for us it lies ahead."
WSU's novice eight team gained valuable experience they can take into the spring racing season, finishing sixth at 19:41.
The race marks the end of the Cougs' fall racing schedule with WSU set to open the 2000 rowing season against Gonzaga who hosts the Fawley Cup in Spokane, March 18.
