PULLMAN, Wash. -- Jamaal Gaines pitched six innings of one-run relief and the Washington State Cougar (24-21) lineup came alive with 15 hits and five home runs to beat the Lewis-Clark Warriors (37-14) 14-11 Saturday afternoon at Bailey Field in a non-conference game.

Gaines (3-4) entered the game in the fourth inning after starter Todd Meldahl was roughed up for 10 runs off eight LCSC hits. Only four of Meldahl's 10 runs were earned, as the WSU infield had three miscues. The Cougar defense has given up 15 unearned runs in the last three games against LCSC.

Gaines pitched six innings while giving up seven hits, and struck out five. He threw only 67 pitches in his appearance and did not record a walk. Gaines also picked off two runners and now has six on the season. For the fifth time this season the WSU pitching staff did not walk a batter.

Clint Cameron opened on the hill for the Warriors and left the game after the second inning with an 8-4 lead at his back. Cameron gave up five hits and four runs in only two innings on the mound while taking a no-decision. Tim Wetteland entered in relief of Cameron and threw three innings of shut-out ball before handing the ball over to a host of pitchers in the LCSC bullpen.

Jon Zumwalt, Owen McCalister, Rob Shoults, and Chad Pierce all took the mound for the Warriors and were roughed up for 10 runs in three innings of work. McCalister (1-1) took the loss as he gave up four runs and four hits in the seventh inning while not recording an out.

At the plate the Cougars broke out of a mild slump that saw them have only 16 hits in the previous two games against LCSC. Saturday the potent Cougar lineup pounded out 15 hits and used timely hitting to put away the Warriors.

Leadoff hitter Shawn Stevenson was 3-for-6 with a two-run double and two singles. First baseman Casey Kelley hit two home runs and is now only one shy of John Oleurd's school-record of 23. Greg Mitchell added his fifth home run in the last eight games and now has 14 on the year. The third baseman added a double and ended the day 3-for-5.

Steve Gleason also had a nice day at the plate as he fell only a double away from hitting for the cycle. Gleason was 3-for-5 with a home run and a triple. The two-sport athlete now has six triples on the season which is only one away from tying the school-record of seven. Scott Randall upped his team-leading average to .362 with a two-hit day. Catcher Ryan Smith was the fourth Cougar to hit a home run as he went yard for the fourth time in '98.

Kendrick Wallace and Toby Cheff led the Warriors at the plate with three hits apiece. Cheff was 3-for-5 with his team-leading seventh home run of '98. Wallace had three singles, but committed a baseball sin by being picked off at first twice by Gaines. Ryan Luther and Ryan Riley both connected on their second home runs of the year off Meldahl and each had two hits.

The Cougs held and early 2-1 lead after the first inning when Kelley and Mitchell hit back-to-back solo home runs. The Warriors exploded for seven runs in the top of the second as they sent 12 batters to the plate. Riley connected on a solo home run and Cheff added a three run shot to give the Warriors an 8-1 lead.

Down 10-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Cougs started on the comeback trail. Gleason hit a one-out solo homer and Mitchell scored Stevenson and Randall with a double to left field to cut LCSC's lead to 10-7.

Washington State took the lead in the seventh with a five-run outburst. Kelley's three-run home run over the center field fence proved to be the game winner as WSU took a 12-10 lead. At one point in the eighth, the Cougar lineup had five straight hits. Stevenson added two insurance runs with a double in the bottom of the eighth.

The Cougars will return to Pac-10 North play next weekend with a four-game series against the Portland State Vikings. Washington State is statistically eliminated from the Pac-10 North race, but can clinch a second place tie with Oregon State if the Beavers loose their remaining game with UW and the Cougs sweep PSU. WSU won the season series against Lewis-Clark State 3-1. It was the first season-series win for the Cougs against LCSC in the Steve Farrington era.
