Here we go again. The excitement in Pullman is evident everywhere. Our quiet small town feels like a city again as the students take back the streets!
The cross country season officially got under way last week, and we are wrapping up our 2nd week of practice. So far, so good! Plenty of new faces on the roster with 15 total cross country freshmen. I don't have much hair left, but with this many freshmen I am bound to lose it all. There is more talent in this class than any other class before, but I have to keep reminding myself they are freshmen and will take some time to develop.
The good news is that on both the men's and women's team we have quite a few experienced returners that will help me raise the new kids right. As usual we began the season with a quick preseason training camp. This year we shot up to Silver Mountain in Idaho for the night and ran the Hiawatha bike trail on Sunday morning. The trail goes through 10 tunnels, with the longest one being 1.66 miles long. I think they enjoyed the adventure, and most importantly spent some quality time together while getting to know the freshmen.
I've selected Drew Polley and Sara Trané as our team captains. Both these athletes were our number one runners at the conclusion of last season. Both are excellent "lead by example," types. Drew has worked harder than anyone in our program the last couple years, and is passion for running drives him every day. Sara also works exceptionally hard, and came to us as an intermediate hurdler who has transformed into one of the best distance runners in the Pac-10. I expect great things from them this season and they exemplify the type of athletes we want to represent our program.
Anyway, I hope to post on this site from time to time and keep you informed on the inside scoop for Cougar Cross Country. Feel free to send me comments or questions.
Until next time, Go Cougs!
