MISSION BAY, Calif. - Washington State women's rowing faced a field of some of last year's highest ranked crews, and took it to them.

The varsity eight competed in the Jessop-Whittier Cup race and rowed a time of 6:52.26 for fourth place, qualifying for the Grand Final on Sunday for the first time in two years. In the two heats for the Whittier Cup, the top three from each make the Grand Final, with the best time of the fourth place finisher's rounding out the group. WSU's time edged out Oregon State's varsity eight time of 6:52.26.

The novice boat continued its successful season by finishing first with a time of 6:58.5 in the women's collegiate novice eight race. With the win, the squad moves onto the novice Grand Final Sunday.

"I'm really excited to make it to the Grand Finals," said Head Coach Tammy Crawford. "Our goal was for both teams to make it to Sunday, and we look forward to racing even better tomorrow."

WSU women's rowing was also competing in Seattle as the second varsity eight and varsity four rowed Saturday at the Husky invitational at Montlake Cut. WSU's second varsity eight boat crossed the line at 6:38.0, beating Washington by nearly four seconds, and taking first place in its race. In the varsity four race, WSU took second place with a time of 7:55.0, just behind the Huskies 7:52.0.

The Cougar varsity eight and novice eight will take the water again Sunday, April 7, in the Grand Finals of the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay, Calif. The varsity race at 2:30 p.m., and the novice are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m., Sunday.
