Washington State vs. Stanford - Jan. 16, 2010 - Pullman, Wash. (Friel Court)
Final Score: WSU 77, Stanford 73

WSU Head Coach Ken Bone
On the start of the second half...
"The start of the second half was not what we wanted either, come out and get outscored 6-0 right away and at least four of the points were off of turnovers which led to breakaway layups, it's a concern. Maybe it's time to shake up the lineup and go with some different guys because that just won't work. We'll take a good look at that this week, that's for sure."

On the players coming off the bench...
"The kids off the bench tonight did an outstanding job. Harthun, when he got in, he did a great job, Charlie Enquist had a lot of energy and helped us tremendously. We're really, really pleased with the guys that came off the bench."

"X (Xavier Thames) did a good job, had four rebounds, five assists, no turnovers. He was good. He didn't score a lot of points, but he had a huge impact on the outcome of the game."

On the keys of the game...
"The key tonight was to play with energy and toughness, that's what we talked about from the time we got beat the other night against Cal. We talked about how we had to come out and play Stanford tonight with energy and toughness. No matter what the outcome, let's at least do those two things and along with those two things, good things will happen. I thought we did that throughout times during the game...We need to get to a point where we can play closer to 40 minutes of solid basketball."

On Landry Fields...
"He and (Jeremy) Green both showed what good players they are. That was no surprise to me, they are both very good."

On where the team is at...
"We are not good enough to feel like certain things are going to come easy. We've shown against certain teams that we can do some good things, but it's not like we're in first place in the conference. If we would have played ASU better, won the Oregon game and maybe played better against Cal, then I'd feel like, 'wow, we're pretty good.' But we all understand in our locker room that we are not there yet."

"We are still going to have some ups and downs and continue to face teams that will give us big challenges. But it's a great group of guys. Man, they're fun to coach, I love their attitudes, I love how they respond. It would have been easy for Reggie and DeAngelo to tank it when I took them out early, a lot of kids do that. But they contributed to this win and they fought back and battled and that's a big sign of maturity."

WSU Guard Marcus Capers
On guarding Landry Fields...
"It's real hard with him, with his arms being so long, he's able to get his shot off over people. But I had great help when he got the ball in the post and with guys like that you just need to be physical with them and luckily I had help from my teammates to slow him down."

On Moore's free throw shooting down the stretch...
"In situations like that it's real important...with him knocking down free throws we were able to keep the lead and all we had to do was get stops. It's really critical that we have someone like that on the team."

Sophomore Forward/Center Charlie Enquist
On his play today...
"At the beginning of the game, Coach emphasized energy and toughness and we watched highlights from our season so far. When he put me in, that's what he expected of me, so I tried to give that."

"I try to get some offensive rebounds, set some screens for Klay, get him some open shots. Block shots too."

Freshman Guard Xavier Thames
On the play from the bench...
"We were pretty good today. Some of the guys came off the bench with great energy. That's what we try to do every game, just come with energy and help the starters out when they get fatigued."

On his jump shot...
"I'm more comfortable, I'm starting to get in the flow with the college game."

Sophomore Guard Klay Thompson
On Charlie Enquist...
"It helps a lot because he had a lot of put-backs and he brought toughness and energy and that's what we needed."

On the looks he got during the first half... "I trust my teammates to set good screens and I got open looks. I wasn't that surprised because we have good screeners."

STANFORD QUOTES

Stanford Head Coach Johnny Dawkins
On the game...
"It was a hard fought game. They made the plays in the first half. We made some adjustments in the second half, we fought and clawed our way back into the game. Down the stretch it was a good game, they made the plays they had to make to win the game. But I give my kids credit, I thought they fought. They tried to make a great comeback but just didn't have enough time."

On the second-half comeback...
"I thought our guys were just more focused on our game plan, we were really dialed in on what we wanted to get accomplished. We tried to slow it down a little bit, but they are a good team. We just had to really defend well."

On the team's defense...
"I thought the first half they executed very well, they got what they wanted, so at the half we had to make some adjustments and slow that up some. But give them credit, they just made the plays they needed to make and their kids played hard. It was a good game."

On the Cougars' defensive intensity...
"I thought they would come out that way, Coach Bone was coming off a tough loss as well, and the kids responded."

On offensive execution...
"I didn't think we had too many outside jumpers, I thought we could have executed better. We are a team that needs to execute well and in the first half we did not do that. It showed on the court and was reflective in the score. Our offensive hurt our defense as well."

Stanford Guard Landry Fields

On Klay Thompson's quick start...
"He had been struggling a little bit in league play, but he is a great player so he is always going to bounce back and he did that today." On first half struggles...
"I was a bit more aggressive and a bit more assertive. I played with a different kind of mindset going into the second half."

On the team's jump shots...
"We have terrific shooters on this team but if it isn't falling than we should look to drive."

On the halftime turnaround...
"We always want to feel like we have a chance to win you know with twenty minutes left anything can happen, but we just couldn't get it done down the stretch."
