RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - - Led by a second place finish from the second varsity eight crew, the Washington State women's rowing team finished third at the Pacific-10 Conference Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma, Sunday.
As a team, the Cougars amassed a total of 50 points, finishing behind only champion California (69) and second place Washington (62).
On a day that saw each of the Cougars' crews advance to their respective Grand Finals, it was the second varsity eight that led the way. The Cougars clocked a time of 6:50.10 in the 2,000 meter race, just behind California, who captured the event with a time of 6:48.40.
WSU was in third at the midway point of the race but the crew of May Lundberg (cox), Daniela Nachazelova, Amber McKnight, Kasia Bloch, Laura Griffin, Shayna Morgan, Audra Durfey, Sharon Finney and Emily Collins overtook Washington with 500 meters to go and bested the Huskies by over four seconds.
The varsity eight turned in a fifth place effort in its Grand Final while the varsity four and novice eight each finished fourth in their finals.
The No. 12 (USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll) varsity eight crew clocked the fastest preliminary time of any of the teams with a mark of 6:37.90.
WSU could not sustain its momentum in the Grand Final however, as the Cougars turned in a time of 6:56.10. No. 1 California cruised to victory with a time of 6:43.80, nearly four second better than second place Washington's 6:47.60.
The varsity four recorded a mark of 7:59.10 in its final as Washington captured the race with a time of 7:43.70.
The novice eight battled Oregon State for third place in its final but fell just short of the Beavers. The Cougars recorded a time of 7:04.20, just behind OSU's 7:03.00. California captured the race with a time of 6:58.70.
