PULLMAN, Wash. - On the shoulders of freshman guard Jazmine Perkins and senior forward Heather Molzen, the Washington State University women's basketball team defeated Long Beach State 68-50 Friday night at Friel Court. The Cougars improved to 4-2 on the season, while the 49ers dropped to 1-4.

Perkins led all scorers with 16 points, her fifth double-digit outing in six games this season. She also recorded a game-high seven assists and tied for the team lead with four steals. Both marks were career highs.

"It wasn't about me scoring a bunch of points," Perkins said. "It's about getting a win, and whoever is open is going to get the ball."

Molzen recorded the second double-double of her career, scoring 14 points and pulling down a game- and season-high 11 rebounds. The double-double was the first by a Cougar this season.

"I was extremely impressed with the way we came out in the first half," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "We had more than 1,000 people in attendance; I hope they can see what we are building here and continue to support our program."

Perkins and senior guard Katie Appleton sparked the WSU offense, combining for each of WSU's first 15 points. The outburst put WSU ahead 15-4 only three minutes into the game, a lead the Cougars wouldn't relinquish. Following the run WSU never led by fewer than seven points and built as much as a 21-point lead.

Appleton also scored in double figures, knocking down three 3-pointers for the third time this season en route to 14 points.

The 50 points allowed were the fewest by the Cougars this season. WSU also recorded 15 steals and forced 28 turnovers - both season highs.

The Cougars close out their two-game home stand with Milwaukee Sunday at Friel Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
