SAN DIEGO - The first day of the San Diego Crew Classic proved to be a successful one for the Washington State women's rowing team as the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight crews all advanced to Sunday's Grand Finals, Saturday at Mission Bay.

The varsity eight - ranked No. 14 in the April 2 US Rowing/NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll - captured third place in its preliminary heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, rowing the 2000m course to a time of 7:01.51. The Cougars advanced to Sunday's Grand Final along with California, Washington, Stanford, Oregon State, USC, and Texas.

The second varsity eight captured its heat with a time of 7:28.3 besting its nearest pursuer California by over six seconds. The Cougars will race against Washington, California, USC, Minnesota, and Stanford in Sunday's Grand Final.

The novice eight opened defense of its Crew Classic title in strong fashion clocking a time of 7:44.8 to win its heat by nearly seven seconds over Texas. The Cougars posted the second fastest time of the 21 squads that raced. WSU will face California, Washington, Oregon State, UCLA and Texas in the Grand Final.

"I am very excited with how well we did," WSU Coach Jane LaRiviere said of Saturday's results. "I think it was well within our ability to compete against some of the top crews in the country. They rose to the occasion and did what they had to do."

San Diego was not the only city the Cougars raced at Saturday as the varsity four and second novice eight crews saw action at the Husky Invitational at Montlake Cut in Seattle. The second novice eight finished second in its race rowing a time of 7:28.3 while the varsity four finished fourth clocking a time of 8:07.5.
