Rowing Heads North to Take on Gonzaga: The No. 12 Washington State University rowing team will open the 2011 spring season as it heads north to Spokane to meet Gonzaga Saturday, March 26...WSU has won 17 of its previous 19 spring contests against Gonzaga...the event starts at 9 a.m. at Silver Lake at Spokane...the Cougars will face a Bulldog team, which dropped four of five races against Oregon State in its season opener March 20 at Silver Lake...this weekend marks Gonzaga's second-straight home dual regatta.

The Gonzaga Dual: Racing will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Silver Lake at Medical Lake, Wash. ...the race is in dual format, in which the boats compete head-to-head...the last event is scheduled to begin at 10:40 a.m.

Last Year at Gonzaga: Last year WSU faced Gonzaga and Division II Western Washington (ranked No. 1 in the Division II polls) at Silver Lake in the spring...No. 10 WSU overcame strong crosswinds to defeat Gonzaga and Western Washington...the Cougars won four of the six races.

Cougars' Last Outing: The Cougars held their annual Class Day Races March 19 at Wawawai Landing...WSU closed out the fall season last November (7) at the Head of the Lake on Montlake Cut at Seattle...the Cougars notched a pair of second-pace finished as it raced against Washington, Western Washington, Gonzaga, Oregon and Portland State, among other schools.

Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere is in her ninth year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...the Cougars have raced in five NCAA Championships under LaRiviere, including a 13th-place finish last season...she is joined by assistant Josh Adam, novice coach Corrie McGrath, and graduate assistant Robyn Willow...Adam is in his first year after coaching the last two years at Indiana...McGrath is in her third year at WSU, after coaching stints at Clemson and Central Florida...Willow also begins her first year after coaching in Canada.

Pac-10 Highly Ranked: Six of the seven Pacific-10 Conference rowing teams are ranked in the preseason CRCA/USRowing Division I Coaches Poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells released March 17...California is third with 440 votes, followed by Stanford in fourth with 404 votes...Washington (seventh, 316), USC (ninth, 296), Washington State (12th, 202) and UCLA (14th, 183) round out the Pac-10 teams in the preseason rankings...Oregon State is receiving votes with 22.

Next Week: Washington State will head to California for the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay April 2-3...the Cougars will race against Stanford, California, USC, Washington, UCLA, Oregon State, Wisconsin, San Diego, Oklahoma, Purdue and Iowa...last season WSU had three top-four finished, including a victory in the Novice Eight race.
