CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Washington State baseball team saw their hopes of a Pac-10 North title disappear Sunday afternoon after the Oregon State Beavers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to gain a 12-11 come-from-behind victory at Coleman Field.

The Beavers (31-11-1, 14-6) are now tied with the University of Washington for first place in the Pac-10 North. The two teams will square off next weekend with a four-game series at Husky Ballpark in Seattle to decided who will win the division crown. The Huskies finished a season sweep of Portland State Sunday with an 8-7 win. The Cougars (22-20, 11-9) remain alone in third place, well ahead of Portland State.

Matt Bailie had a game to remember Sunday as he was 3-for-3 at the plate and pitched two perfect innings to pick up the win on the mound. Bailie (2-0) entered in relief in the eighth and struck out four of the six batters he faced. Bailie struck out the side in the ninth to give the Beavers a 3-2 advantage in the five-game weekend series.

B.R. Cook opened for the Beavers and struggled giving up 10 runs in just over four innings of work. Joe Gerber moved to the mound from the DH position and gave up one run in two plus innings of work. Rob Colley and Gerber each added three hits in the Beaver's 31st win of the season. Gerber recorded OSU's only home run of the afternoon with a three-run shot in the bottom of the first.

Jamaal Gaines opened for Washington State and was shaky in his four inning appearance. Gaines gave up 10 runs on 12 OSU hits, but escaped with a no-decision after the Cougs made up the ten-run deficit.

Ole Vigeland added two innings of shut-out relief before handing the ball to Aaron Cozzens in the bottom of the eighth. Cozzens couldn't hold down the one-run advantage for the Cougs, as he gave up two crucial runs in the eighth to give the Beavers the come-from-behind win.

Cougar second baseman Scott Randall continued his torrid hitting against the Beavers with a 2-for-3 afternoon, including his 10th double of the season. In the five game series, Randall was 8-for-19 (.421) with a home run, a double, and a triple.

Steve Gleason finished off a hot week that saw him hit .538 in WSU's six games. The two-sport athlete was 2-for-4 Sunday with a double and finished the weekend series with OSU 5-for-11.

Third baseman Greg Mitchell connected on his third home run of the weekend and had five RBIs. The senior from Maple Ridge, British Columbia hit a grand slam in the fifth inning that pulled the Cougs to within two, 10-8. Freshman Jason Grove was 2-for-4, including his ninth home run of the year.

The Cougs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first, much to the help of Grove's two-run home run. The Beavers answered with a three spot of their own in the bottom of the inning and took a 4-3 lead after scoring a single tally in the second.

The Beavers jumped out to a commanding 10-4 lead after scoring four runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Corrie Willkie provided the big blow with a bases clearing three-run double down the right field line.

In the bottom of the fifth the Cougs started on the comeback trail knowing that their dreams of a Pac-10 North title were on the line. WSU rallied for six runs to lock the game at 10. Mitchell accounted for four of the runs with his blast to right field, and Ray Hattenburg hit his second career home run to account for the other two runs.

The Cougars pulled ahead in the top of the seventh when Gleason doubled home Hattenburg with the go-ahead run. The Cougs nearly added an insurance run, but Randall lined out to center field to leave Gleason stranded at third.

For the second day in a row, and the fifth time this season, the Cougars entered the eighth inning with a lead and couldn't walk away with a win. Cozzens gave up the tying and go-ahead runs to pick up the loss. Bailie finished off a stellar day when he doubled home Drew Hedges with the game-winning run.

Oregon State pitching coach Ron Northcutt and WSU coaches Steve Farrington and Russ Swan were all ejected in this game as a result several controversial calls by the umpires.

The Cougs and Beavers split the season series with four wins apiece. Next up for Washington State will be three-games against regional rival Lewis-Clark State. Games will be held Wednesday and Friday in Lewiston, and a 1 p.m. game at Bailey Field Saturday. Both games in Lewiston will be under the lights at 6 p.m. at Harris Field.
