Cougars Successful at Head of the Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing team completed its first dual regatta of the season against Gonzaga at the Head of the Spokane, Saturday morning on the Spokane River.

In the second flight of the day (the Gonzaga and WSU men competed as well), the Cougar varsity eight boat (Annie Eastwood - bow, Sarah Wolff, Liz England, Mollie McCabe, Justine Galbraith, Allie Reilly, Katie Dick, Natasha Ostopovich - stroke, Heidi Kim - coxswain) came in first with a time of 17:01.

WSU's second varsity eight (Jennifer Hale - bow, Crystal Martin, Hannah deVos, Alison Smith, Stephanie Hinkle, Corinna Sharick, Sarah Powell, Rachel McNeil - stroke, Lexi Ryman - coxswain) finished behind the varsity boat with a time of 17:21, 27 seconds ahead of Gonzaga's varsity eight crew. The Cougars' third varsity eight (Erin Ranney - bow, Kasia Rademacher, Liana DeMaris, Ann Hoag, Rachel Snodgrass, Hailey Engstrom, Liz Beck, Carly Johnson - stroke, Rachel Johnson - coxswain) was just eight seconds behind the Bulldogs' first boat, in fourth, with a time of 17:56.

In the fifth flight, WSU's fourth varsity eight (Ella Odland, Kendall Boliba, Rachel Snodgrass, Brianne Gould, Liz Beck, Carly Johnson - stroke, Emily Boquet - coxswain) defeated Gonzaga's third varsity eight with a time of 18:50. The Bulldogs were 1:14 behind with a time of 20:04.

Also in the second flight, Washington State's first and second novice eight crews competed. The Cougs' first novice (Katelyn Maley, Emma Stammer, Lindsey Langer, Alicia Brandkamp, Natasha Wooters, Elise Jones, Ashlee Bonahoom, Sydney Frederick, Sydney Dawson - coxswain) finished second, 10 seconds behind Gonzaga's second novice eight with a time of 19:56. Gonzaga's first novice came in two seconds later with a time of 19:58. WSU's second novice (Megan Birge, Shelly Donohue, Hannah Jacobs, Olivia Dehner, Megan Bech, Gina Head, Samantha Hoeper, Rachel Damiano, Sara Murphy - coxswain) was fourth with a time of 30:07.

In the fifth flight, WSU's third novice eight (Melissa Brown, Shelly Donohue, Chelsey Stotler, Alyssa Rumann, Rachel Damiano, Elise Jones, Emily Starkle, Alicia Brandkamp, Lila Hart - coxswain) was just beat out by Gonzaga's third crew with a time of 21:37, just one second behind the Bulldogs.

WSU will return to the Palouse to host the Head of the Snake Friday, Oct. 29, at Wawawai Landing. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cougars will be wearing pink in each of the boats. The regatta is slated to start at 3 p.m.
