SEATTLE, Wash. - The Washington State women's varsity eight crew, ranked 10th nationally, lost to 4th-ranked California by 5.5 seconds in a dual race in rainy conditions at Montlake Cut in Seattle Sunday morning.

The Cougar second varsity eight (JV8) and varsity four boats defeated the Bears on the 2000 meters course.

"We were ahead of Cal at the halfway point but couldn't hold on to the lead," Cougar coach Tammy Crawford said of the varsity eight race. "The polls could see a shakeup after Cal raced to within one second of #1 Washington on Saturday. I think we're on track to get an NCAA bid, and that is our goal."

WSU will compete Saturday, May 1, against Oregon State at Vancouver Lake, in Vancouver, Wash.
