PULLMAN, Wash. - Josh Akognon has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men's basketball at Washington State University next fall, Cougar Head Coach Dick Bennett announced, Thursday.

Akognon (Uh-Koy-YUN), attended Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, Calif. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound guard averaged 30 points as a senior for coach Jeremy Russotti. Akognon's scoring average was fifth in the state of California last season and he averaged 6.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.4 steals. He recorded six games of 40 or more points, including a 54-point effort in his second-to-last prep outing.

He was named Player of the Year in the Sonoma County League and Redwood Empire Section. In addition he was a Division II first team All-State selection and garnered Northern California Division II Player of the Year honors.

"Josh is a very welcome addition to our Cougar basketball family," Bennett said. "He was a prolific scorer in high school and we look forward to him bringing that ability to the college level."

Bennett added, "Most importantly, Josh is a person of character, comes from a great family, and fits in ideally to the quality freshman class that will arrive on campus this fall."

"I wanted to send Josh to the right coach and there is no one better than Dick Bennett," Russotti said. "Josh is a really quiet kid. He is very reserved and just wants to work. He is an ideal fit for coach Bennett's system."
