Cougars Complete Racing at Head of the Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing team finished racing at the Head of the Spokane Saturday and posted the top women's time of the regatta. The Cougars raced three varsity eights, three novice eights, three varsity fours, and two pairs.

During the second flight of the day (there were men's and club flights as well), Washington State's varsity eight (bow - Kayla Wakulich, Sarah Powell, Katie Dick, Lisa Roman, Liz England, Allie Reilly, Hannah deVos, Mickey Aylard, coxswain - Rachel Johnson) finished the five-kilometer head race in the fastest time of any women's boats at the regatta with a time of 17 minutes and 14 seconds (17:14), in route to beating the Gonzaga varsity eight, which posted a time of 17:59. The second varsity eight (bow - Kasia Rademacher, Liana DeMaris, Kendall Boliba, Mollie McCabe, Elise Jones, Sarah Wolff, Alison Smith, Jennifer Hale, coxswain - Heidi Kim) also won their match-up with their Gonzaga counter-part in a time of 17:28.

In the same flight, the Cougars' first novice eight finished in a time of 21:55, falling to the Bulldogs' first novice eight, but managing to out-stroke Gonzaga's second novice eight by 28 seconds.

Later in the fifth flight of the regatta, Washington State raced their third varsity eight (bow - Alyssa Rumann, Samantha Hoeper, Kelsey Lounsbury, Martha Jackson, Rachel Snodgrass, Kerry Hassall, Ashlee Bonahoom, Noel Christiansen, coxswain - Sarah Wu), winning their respective match-up with Gonzaga in a time of 17:56. During the same flight the Cougars' third novice eight also competed and finished in a time of 22:20.

Also in the fifth flight of the day were the women's varsity fours. Washington State's first varsity four (bow - Emily Starkel, Jess Munro, Alex Waddell, Carly Johnson, coxswain - Lexi Ryman) and second varsity four (bow - Erin Ranney, Kellen Srb, Stephanie Hinkle, Brianne Gould) both won their match-ups against Gonzaga in times of 19:13 and 19:35, respectively. The third varsity four (bow - Hannah Jacobs, Gina Head, Megan McDonald, Ella Odland, coxswain - Alexandra Biswas) completed the course in a time of 20:19.

Washington State also raced two pairs, which finished their races in times of 20:12 and 25:03.

The Cougars varsity team returns to the water for fall competition Saturday, Oct. 29 for the Portland Loop in Portland, Ore. Also, a last-minute addition to the fall schedule, the WSU novice team with be competing in Pullman, Wash. at Wawawai Landing on Friday Oct. 28 against the Gonzaga novice team.
