PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University has been recommended by the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee to be a host for first and second round West Region games of the Championship Tournament in 2003, Cougar Athletics Director Rick Dickson announced Thursday.

The NCAA Division I Championships/Competitive Cabinet will act on the recommendations in early February 1999. If approved, WSU would stage the Thursday, March 20th first round and Saturday, March 22nd second round games at the Spokane Arena, site of the 1997 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championships.

"We are extremely pleased to have been awarded the first and second rounds of the West Region men's basketball tournament in the year 2003," Dickson said. "We feel confident in the working partnership with the Spokane Arena with Kevin Twohig, Amy Brown and their staff along with Sherri Frye, Deb Schultheis and the other Cougar staff who will help stage this event which is one of the premier sporting events in the country."

"We are very pleased that the NCAA has chosen to place another one of their Championship events in the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena," Spokane Arena General Manager Kevin Twohig said. "We are looking forward to the NCAA Women's Basketball West Regional in 2001. Hopefully, for both of these events, we'll be able to duplicate the success of the 1997 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship."

Each of the four regions have two sites for the first and second round games. The University of Utah's Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City is recommended as the other West Region site. The recommended site for the West Regional is Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, Calif., with the Big West Conference serving as hosts March 27th and 29th, 2003. The men's Div. I Final Four is set for the following weekend at the Louisiana Superdome.

Washington State University is also hosting the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball West Regional March 24 and 26th, 2001, at the Spokane Arena.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
WSU Men's Basketball Coach, Kevin Eastman:
"This is a tremendous plus for basketball in our area. One of the most important things we can and should do as coaches is to strive in every way possible to improve the game of basketball in our region. We can do this by sharing information and knowledge we have to kids and coaches at all levels, but to add an NCAA regional competition to this mix just strengthens the cause!

"I want to thank all the people involved in this endeavor, and want them to know that all of us involved in basketball greatly appreciate their efforts."
