WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State University men's basketball junior Brock Motumhas been named the Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 5-11, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
A native of Brisbane, Australia, Motum led the Cougars to two victories last week, a 66-64 win at Idaho Wednesday (Dec. 7) and a 93-55 win over Santa Clara Sunday (Dec. 11). The Cougars have now won four-straight games, the longest current win-streak of any team in the Pac-12.
WSU's second-leading scorer (15.6 points per game), Motum had a career night Sunday against Santa Clara, putting up a career-high 27 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field. He made a career-best eight free throws and was just three rebounds shy of a double-double with seven boards. Motum also tied his career high with four assists and added a steal in 31 minutes of action.
In Wednesday's game against Idaho, the 6-foot-10 forward scored 12 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists, as WSU won at the buzzer. On the week he shot .619 from the field (13-for-21) and .500 (2-for-4) from beyond the 3-point arc, averaged 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 19.5 points per game.
Motum currently ranks sixth in the Pac-12 and 165th in the nation with 15.6 points per game, and sixth in the league and 42nd in the country with a .567 field goal percentage (59-for-104). He is the only player in the Pac-12 to rank in the top-eight in both scoring and field goal percentage. He is also the only Cougar to score in double figures in all 10 games this season.
This is the first honor for Motum, who becomes the first Cougar not named Klay Thompson to earn conference player of the week since Taylor Rochestie picked up the honor, Feb. 23, 2009. Thompson was named Pac-10 player of the Week twice last year and twice during the 2009-10 season. One of Thompson's awards came last season during the same week. Motum is the first WSU forward to pick up the accolades since Daven Harmeling, Feb. 4, 2007. It marks Washington State's 24th all-time Player of the Week.
The Cougars have a week off from games before hosting Western Oregon, Sunday, Dec. 18 at 4:35 p.m. at Beasley Coliseum. WSU is offering a $10 general admission ticket special for that game. More details can be found at www.wsucougars.com.
