PULLMAN, Wash. - With a 3-1 record after two weeks on the road, the Cougar soccer team will head to San Luis Obispo, Calif. where the coaching staff will have a homecoming of sorts.

Head Coach Dan Tobias played and coached at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo (SLO) before joining the Cougar staff and assistant coach Wendy Jones was an All-American at Cal Poly SLO. While assistant Curtis McAlister was not a Mustang, he is a Calif. native.

"It will be fun to go there," Tobias said in a press conference Tuesday, "but it will be different sitting on the other bench. I will try not to get caught up in that aspect and just make sure our team concentrates on our performance."

After not winning one road game in 1999, and only bringing home two victories on the road in Tobias' tenure, the Cougs are off to a strong start with their 3-1 record coming on the road. WSU's most recent wins came at the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament, a 2-1 win over East Carolina and a 1-0 double overtime victory against Navy.

One key to the Cougars success has been a freshman class of nine, four of whom have earned starting positions.

"We are still starting four [freshmen] and six are playing significant minutes," Tobias said. "There was a point where seven were on the field at once. There is nothing like game experience. There's that old saying that `the best coach is the game itself.'"

Also key to the Cougars success is senior co-captain Deka DeWitt. Currently tied for the school career assist record (14), DeWitt has the chance to set the record this weekend. Navy had originally credited her with the record setting assist on Sunday, but after review of the tape decided the ball came off a Navy player.

The Cougars leave for San Luis Obispo, Calif. Thursday, taking on Cal Poly Friday at 7 p.m. PT and San Jose State (also at San Luis Obispo) Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
