Cougar Rowing Ranked 14th in Preseason Poll

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University women's rowing is ranked 14th in the preseason USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I Poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells, the organizations announced.

Six of the Pac-12's seven rowing squads are ranked in the top-20 poll. California is second with 438 votes, followed by Stanford in fifth with 373 votes. Southern California (sixth, 368), Washington (eighth, 304), Washington State (14th, 182) and UCLA (20th, 61) round out the Pac-12 teams in the preseason rankings. Oregon State is receiving votes with 3.

Virginia is ranked first in the preseason poll for the second-consecutive year with 461 votes. Last year's national champion, Brown, is ranked fourth in the poll with 381, while Princeton sits at third after receiving 395 points.

At the 2011 NCAA Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma, Calif., the Pac-10 Champions, California Golden Bears, placed third, while the conference's runner-up, Stanford, edged Cal to take second. Washington State finished fifth in the conference and 12th at the NCAA Championships in 2011.

The Cougars return three rowers from last season's varsity eight boat, which placed 11th at last year's Championships and six from the second varsity eight boat that placed 10th.

WSU opens the 2012 season at the San Diego Crew Classic March 31 and April 1 at Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif.
