EL CAJON, Calif. - Led by a dominant performance from freshman Nick Ellis, the Washington State University men's golf team finished 12th at the inaugural Sycuan Collegiate Invitational, Tuesday.

Shooting a 1-over par 73 in the final round, Ellis notched his first career top 10 finish as his three-round total of 222 was good for a tie at seventh on the par-72, 6,687-yard Willow Glen golf course. Ellis' second-round score of even par matched the best of the tournament for the Cougars.

"Nick [Ellis] is playing solid right now and is getting better each time he comes out," WSU Head Coach Walt Williams said. "Kevin Tucker also played some solid golf considering the windy and smoky conditions. We've got one more tournament this fall and hope to find the right combination to be successful and move into the spring."

The Cougars battled back throughout the tournament, including moving up six places in the second round, and finished with a total score of 924. The team also combined for 308 in the final round.

Sophomore Kevin Tucker improved throughout the two-day tournament and produced a 4-over 76 in the final round to finish with a total of 231.

Junior Brandon Black, in his first collegiate tournament, carded a 235, senior Jordan Mason shot a 240 and freshman Dustin Poe notched a 249 to round out the Cougar contingent.

The Cougars wrap up the fall season when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 29, for the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
