Dietel Named To GTE Academic All-American Team

PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore forward Alke Dietel, whose season was cut short by knee surgery 14 games into the year, has been named to the GTE Academic All-America third team in District VIII.

Dietel, who sports a 3.23 cumulative grade point average in interior design, was one of six Pacific-10 Conference players selected to the three district teams by the College Sports Information Directors of American.

The Cougar forward was averaging 17.0 points and 7.3 rebounds at the time of her injury suffered in practice Jan. 20, the day before WSU hosted the Stanford Cardinal. At the time, she ranked third in scoring among Pac-10 players and fifth in rebounding. She also ranked fourth in free throw percentage (77.8%) and sixth in three-point shooting percentage (37.2%). She had four double-double outings before suffering the injuries and scored 20 or more points six times, including a career-high 31 points against Idaho.

Dietel has indicated she plans to remain in Pullman this summer to complete her rehabilitation from the injury and will compete for the Cougars next season.

Also nominated from WSU were sophomores Katie Nyseth and Victoria Harrod. Nyseth, WSUs starting point guard, has a 3.86 grade point average, while Harrod has a 3.98 gpa.
