TEMPE, Ariz. - The Washington State University contingent, half of the competitors at the Pac-10 heptathlon championships, are in second through fifth place after the first day's competition at Arizona State's Sun Angel Stadium. Freshmen Ellannee Richardson (3,315) and Whitney Evans (3,272) are second and third while junior LaTroya Mucker (3,159) is fourth and senior Nicky Booth (2,718) is fifth.
Stanford's Tracye Lawyer, who is the defending Pac-10 champion and finished second at last year's NCAA heptathlon, leads this year's contest after winning three of the first four events and ending the day with 3,740 points.
WSU's Richardson, from Gladstone, Ore., claimed the sole event win away from Lawyer with a narrow win in the 200m dash in 23.78 seconds while Lawyer ran 23.81. Richardson had personal-bests in all four events. Richardson's previous first-day best was 3,178 points toward her NCAA provisional qualifier and win at the Arizona Multi-Invitational Mar. 17-18 at Tucson.
Evans, from Calgary, Canada, tied Lawyer for first in the high jump with a season-best 5-11 1/2 leap and had prs in the 200m and shot put as well. Evan's previous first day career-high was 3,137 points in March at Tucson.
Mucker, from Los Angeles, only combined events competition this season, had prs in the shot put (38-10 1/4) and the 200m dash (24.01). Mucker finished fourth at the 1998 Pac-10 meet in her only other heptathlon competition.
Booth, a hurdler from Federal Way, Wash., made a big impression in her multi-events debut including a fourth-place tie in the high jump at 5 feet, 1 inch.
In the decathlon competition, California's Bevan Hart leads after the first five events with 3,903 points. WSU freshman Steve Dwyer from Redmond, Wash., is sixth with 3,451 points.
