PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Apple Cup is still a month away but the Cougar and Huskies are set to clash in the rowing version of the annual football battle with the Campbell Cup on the line this Saturday, October 21, at Lake Chelan's Don Morse Park.

The event begins at 9 a.m. and encompasses a 1200-meter sprint, a shorter distance, according to WSU head coach Tammy Crawford, than a typical fall-season race which is usually three miles in length.

"Racing the Huskies is always a great opportunity for quality competition and obviously we have a passionate rivalry with them," said Crawford.

The Cougars take a veteran team into this weekend's competition. Corrie McGrath, Amy Armstrong, and Emily Larson return from last year's varsity eight and the trio of Jackie Kern, Michelle Darbous, and Kim Oergel move up from the second varsity eight. Coxswain Jenny Hughes and Carolyn Oury make the transition from the last year's novice squad and newcomer Gunilla Grafnings round out the roster.

Saturday's event kicks off a 2000-01 season in which Crawford has high expectations for her team.

"Last year four varsity eights from the Pac-10 went to the NCAA's," said Crawford. "We were fifth and would obviously like to improve on that. The Huskies finished second. I have a great deal of respect for them, but I would be lying if I said we were going there to lose. Our goal is to beat them."

After the Campbell Cup, the Cougars continue their fall schedule with two more events. WSU next competes in the Head of Spokane, Saturday, October 28, against Gonzaga University at the Gonzaga boathouse on the Spokane River. WSU then travels to Seattle, Sunday, November 12, for the Head of the Lake at Montlake Cut. Once again the Cougars will face the Huskies along with California, Stanford and Oregon State.
