PULLMAN, Wash. --- Assistant coach Curtis McAlister's Crimson team defeated head coach Dan Tobias' Gray team 2-0 to end the first week of training for the Washington State women's soccer team.

Sophomore forward Rachel Rodrick scored both goals in the match for the Crimson team, which was composed of the top 12 players thus far in the preseason.

"We weren't too concerned with the results," Tobias said. "This was the first time with the big numbers and our first chance to evaluate them as a group."

A new defensive scheme was also under the microscope in the first 11-on-11 action of the 2001 season.

"It's all new for them right now," McAlister said. "This year, we have more speed and that is going to allow us to be more aggressive."

"We're about where I thought we would be right now. We are trying to allow our players to understand when to pressure and how high to pressure," Tobias said of the defense.

Washington State will get a final tune-up in Couer d'Alene Aug. 25 in a "friendly match" against NCAA Tournament opponent Montana. Tobias likes the depth of his team heading into the regular season.

"There is great competition for the top 18-20 spots for the travel roster and this looks to be our deepest team since I got here in 1998," Tobias said.

The Cougars open the 2001 campaign in Las Vegas, Nev., Aug. 31 with a match against St. Mary's. WSU will play Nevada-Las Vegas to end the road trip on Sept. 2.
