Cougars Complete Fall Season in Battle at Head of the Lake

SEATTLE - The Washington State University women's rowing team completed its fall season Sunday at the Head of the Lake on Montlake Cut, notching a pair of second-place finishes on the day.

For the third-consecutive year, the Cougar varsity eight (Annie Eastwood - bow, Sarah Wolff, Justine Galbraith, Lisa Roman, Liz England, Christina Kinck, Katie Dick, Natasha Ostopovich - stroke, Lexi Ryman - coxswain) placed second in the championship women 8+ event by finishing less than three seconds behind the first-place Washington crew. With a time of 18:07.25, WSU closed its gap with Washington after finishing eight seconds behind the Huskies last season. Gonzaga placed third with a time of 18:46.86. Western Washington and Lewis & Clark College rounded out the top five.

"It was a good day, we were very close to UW," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "It should be a fun spring."

The Cougar second varsity eight (Sarah Powell - bow, Crystal Martin, Jennifer Hale, Alison Smith, Mollie McCabe, Corinna Sharick, Allie Reilly, Rachel McNeil - stroke, Heidi Kim - coxswain) also came in second place in the Women's Collegiate JV 8+ for the third-straight year. WSU finished with a time of with a time of 18:34.67, over a minute ahead of Western Washington in third with a time of 19:50.38. Washington placed first in 18:07.53.

Washington State finished second and third, respecitively, in the Women's Collegiate 3V 8+. The WSU third varsity eight (Kendall Boliba, Liana DeMaris, Kerry Hassall, Erin Ranney, Brianne Gould - stroke, Rachel Johnson - coxswain) came in third place overall, with a time of 19:34.91, and finished approximately 50 seconds ahead of the Washington fourth varsity eight.

WSU will next begin winter training, followed by the start of the spring season March 19 with Class Day races at Wawawai Landing. The Cougars will have rematches with both Gonzaga and Washington this spring, traveling to Gonzaga March 26 and hosting the Huskies April 9.
