Pullman, Wash. - Washington State University's varsity eight team led the way in the inaugural Head of the Snake Friday. In the 5,000m four boat race, the Cougars varsity eight won by 18 seconds, with WSU's second varsity eight edging out Gonzaga's varsity eight crew by a second. WSU's third varsity eight rounded out the race.
"First of all I'd like to thank Gonzaga for making the trip over," said WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere in regard to the Head of The Snake. "All of our boats did a great job and we're looking forward to rowing next week in Seattle."
Five novice boats raced but the time was not recorded. One of the boats was a combination of Bulldog and Cougar rowers.
"The goal today for the novice rowers was to gain some experience and row next to someone in a different uniform, and I think we succeeded in that," said WSU Novice Coach Vita Scaglione.
