Cougars Earn Victories at Lone Home Regatta of Fall

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's first, second and third varsity boats defeated Gonzaga's varsity eight crew Friday at the Head of the Lake at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.

"We couldn't have asked for better weather," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "We're happy Gonzaga came to race and we got another race under our belts before the Head of the Lake."

In the second flight of the day (the WSU and Gonzaga men competed in the first flight), the Cougars' first varsity eight (Annie Eastwood - bow, Sarah Wolff, Liz England, Lisa Roman, Corinna Sharick, Christina Kinck, Justine Galbraith, Natasha Ostopovich - stroke, Lexi Ryman - coxswain) won the race with a time of 17:46.24.

WSU's second varsity eight (Sarah Powell - bow, Kasia Rademacher, Mollie McCabe, Alison Smith, Stephanie Hinkle, Crystal Martin, Allie Reilly, Rachel McNeil - stroke, Heidi Kim - coxswain) placed second with a time of 18:12.62. The Cougars' third crew (Erin Ranney - bow, Liz Beck, Rachel Snodgrass, Ann Hoag, Hannah deVos, Hailey Engstrom, Jennifer Hale, Carly Johnson - stroke, Emily Boquet - coxswain) finished just six seconds head of the Bulldogs' first crew in third with a time of 18:29.78.

Gonzaga's first varsity eight placed fourth with a time of 18:35.80, followed by its second novice eight with a mark of 20:05.32. WSU's first novice eight placed seventh with a time of 20:27.77, while the second novice eight crew came in ninth with a time of 21:50.71.

WSU's fourth varsity eight (Kendall Boliba, Ella Odland, Kerry Hassall, Liz Beck, Carly Johnson - stroke, Rachel Johnson - coxswain) won the fourth flight with a time of 19:18.03, followed by Gonzaga's third varsity eight boat with a time of 20:11.71. WSU's third novice eight placed sixth with a time of 21:57.58.

The Cougars wore pink at the regatta in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. WSU returns for its final regatta of the fall, Nov. 7 at the Head of the Lake where it will face Washington on Montlake Cut.
