PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Adriane Ferguson led three Washington State Cougars in double figures with 16 points en route to a 73-67 exhibition victory over Lewis-Clark State, Friday, at Bohler Gymnasium.
In addition to Ferguson's team high point total, senior Kate Benz posted 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Last year's Pac-10 rebounding champion, Benz, brought down seven rebounds, second only to Ferguson's nine boards. The Cougars also received support from freshman Colleen Betteridge as she went 2-for-3 shooting from behind the 3-point arc and finished with 13 points.
"We're going to get better," WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. "We've got to grow and learn from these types of games."
"I thought Adriane Ferguson was the difference in the game," Murrell added. "She came in, got rebounds and did a lot of scrappy things."
The Cougars held a 36-32 lead at halftime, but the Warriors opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take a nine point advantage. The Cougars fell behind by as many as 11 points on two occasions during the final 20 minutes.
Down 60-50 with 11:12 remaining, a Betteridge jumper sparked a 19-4 run, which included 3-point baskets from Ferguson and Amanda DuRocher, to give the Cougars a 69-64 lead with 1:12 remaining.
The Warriors would not go away as a Jade Fulbright's jumper put LCSC within two at 69-67 with 19 seconds left. But the senior duo of Benz and Ferguson combined to go a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line to clinch the win.
The Warriors had four players reach double digits in scoring as Terri Wittmer led the way with 17. Janeen Nelson shot 3-for-6 behind the arc and finished the game with 15 points.
The Cougars begin the regular season in the Women's Sports Foundation Classic in Lexington, Ky., Friday Nov. 10 and Sunday, Nov. 12. The Cougars take on the University of Kentucky at 5 p.m. and then will play either Indiana or Wake Forest at 8 a.m., both times Pacific. The Cougars' first home game is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m. against Sacramento State in Beasley Coliseum.
