SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington State women's varsity eight successfully defended its title Saturday against Gonzaga at the Head of Spokane rowing regatta on the Spokane River, capping off a positive start to the fall season.
The Cougars' varsity eight finished an enduring 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes and 35 seconds followed by Gonzaga's varsity eight at an even 18:00 and WSU's second varsity eight at 18:11.
In the Division I novice eight race, WSU-A came across the line first in 19:20, ahead of Gonzaga's 19:49 mark and WSU-B's 20:10 finish. Both WSU teams won the Division II novice eight race finishing at 21:05 and 21:09 with Gonzaga-B finishing at 21:14 and Gonzaga-C at 25:46.
Washington State carried the momentum into the women's varsity four race, winning in a time of 19:44, with the WSU-B boat second at 20:26 and North Idaho College last at 22:43.
Keeping true to traditional fall season racing, all crews competed over 5,000 meter courses, and were staggered at approximate 20-second intervals. The day's competition ended after the completion of races organized in three separate flights.
Cougar Head Coach Tammy Crawford said she was very pleased with the outcome of every race and considers the Cougs' success Saturday, a good stepping stone toward Pac-10 competition in Seattle, Nov. 13 and 14.
WSU women rowers will again face Gonzaga in its next competition at Head of the Snake in Pullman, Oct. 30 and is scheduled to feature novice squads only.
