CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State scored twice in the first half and the 21st-ranked Beavers held off No. 18 Washington State 2-1 in Pac-12 women's soccer, Friday night.

The Beavers (11-4-1, 5-2-0 Pac-12) broke a four-match unbeaten streak for Washington State (10-5-2, 4-2-1 Pac-12). The victory moved Oregon State into second place in the conference standings while the Cougars fell to fourth place.

"Our preparation was spot on, but in the first half we didn't show up to play and we were punished for it," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "Our effort in the second half was much better and we got a reward for it. However, we dug ourselves too big of a hole and that it is our lesson for tonight. If we had the same effort for 90 minutes, we might be talking about a different story, but credit Oregon State for going up two goals."

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Ashley Folsom flicked the ball past Cougar goalkeeper Gurveen Clair off a corner kick by Jacy Drobney.

Oregon State added to its lead in the 34th minute. Justyne Freud's free kick from 50 yards out bounced in the box and was poked home by Chelsea Buckland.

The Cougars generated three corner kicks and a couple of shots in the first 13 minutes of the second half, but was unable to cut into the Oregon State lead.

In the 73rd minute, Washington State was awarded a penalty kick that freshman Jocelyn Jeffers buried for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Cougars travel to Oregon for a 1 p.m. match, Sunday.
