CLARKSTON, Wash. - The Washington State University men's golf team defeated the University of Idaho at the Inland Cup Friday, breaking the school record for the lowest single-round total with a 12-under par 268.
WSU earned its second tournament victory of the season and gave Head Coach Walt Williams his 13th win at the helm of the Cougar men's program.
The Cougars fired a two-round total of 559 and won the tournament by 13 strokes on the par-70, 6,121-yard Quail Ridge golf course and at the par-72, 6,712-yard Lewiston Golf and Country Club. Freshman Nick Ellis took home the individual title with a 6-under 136.
"The men played a spectacular round in the morning and Ellis played solid just like he has for most of the season," Williams said. "Overall the men had a great performance."
Ellis earned the first tournament victory of his career and cracked the list for top 10 finishes in a season with four (T6th). Ellis' first round score of 67 is the lowest round of his career.
Junior Brandon Black and sophomores Nick Grigsby and Kevin Tucker fired first round scores of 66 which tie them with seven other Cougars for the third lowest single-round score in school history. Tucker ended the day with a total of 138, good for second place overall and the best finish of his career.
Black, playing as an individual, placed third with a score of 139 and also earned the best finish of his career. Grigsby ended the day close behind with a total score of 141 and earned his best finish by placing fifth overall.
Senior Jordan Mason finished in eighth place and moved into sole possession of 10th overall on the top 25 finishes list with 11. Mason inked a two-round total of 144.
Sophomore Austin Hurt shot a 147 to round out the Cougar contingent and earned his second career top 10 finish by placing 10th overall. Freshmen Xavier Dailly and Dustin Poe, playing as individuals, shot 151 and 154 respectively.
The Cougars are back in action April 7-8 at the Stevenson Ranch Invitational at Stevenson Ranch, Calif.
