PULLMAN, Wash. - Though the Washington State University women's basketball team dropped its season opener to Portland 70-40 at Friel Court, Friday, first-year head coach June Daugherty likes the improvement she has seen from her players since her arrival.

"I thought we showed progress from our exhibitions and we are going to continue to build," Daugherty said. "They have a great deal of pride and they work hard everyday. I am seeing improvements. Obviously it's difficult to lose like we did tonight at home...but I am seeing progress."

The Cougars struggled to get their offensive attack going, hitting just 8-of-46 attempts from the floor. WSU was also out-rebounded 48-32, and allowed the Pilots to pull down19 offensive boards.

"We did not do a good job of eliminating second and third shots after forcing Portland into some tough shooting situations," Daugherty said.

It wasn't all bad for WSU, however. As a team WSU forced 20 turnovers and held the Pilots to 2-of-11 shooting from the 3-point line.

Individually, junior guard Katie Appleton (5-foot-8) scored a game-high 12 points and recorded a game-high five steals. Redshirt freshman Salena Dickerson (5-11) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds to go with nine points and two blocks, while sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge (5-9) led the team with four assists.

"I feel very privileged to get to coach this group," Daugherty said. "They believe in what we are trying to do and are working hard to get there."

WSU continues its season Tuesday (Nov. 13) against Santa Clara at Friel Court. The game is slated to tip-off at 7 p.m.
