PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State bolted to an early lead and defeated visiting Weber State 3-1 in nonconference women's soccer at Lower Soccer Field, Sunday.

Junior Brandi Vega gave the Cougars (4-1-0) a 1-0 lead just 36 seconds into the match on a hard shot from eight yards out after receiving a pass from the right by freshman Nicole Setterlund.

At the 5:43 mark, sophomore Micaela Castain dribbled past a defender inside the 18 and fired a shot from the left side for her 11th-career goal and her fifth-career game-winner.

Washington State made it 3-0 at 7:46 when Setterlund sent a ball from near midfield to senior Tiara Pittman who chipped the ball over a charging Weber State (1-3-0) goalkeeper Ryann Waldman from just inside the top of the box.

"I am very pleased with the energy and effort of our team at the start of the match," Washington State Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We are in a good position at this point of our season, but we have a challenging schedule ahead of us over the next few weeks to close out our nonconference."

Washington State dominated the stat sheet as the Cougars held a 20-5 advantage in shots and earned all of the match's six corner kicks. Weber State avoided the shutout in the 65th minute when Kierstin Raught notched her first goal of the season.

Washington State plays its next six matches away from home beginning with the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic in Charlottesville, Va. The Cougars will take on nationally-ranked Virginia at 4 p.m. Pacific, Friday, Sept. 9 and play UCF at 8 a.m. Pacific, Sunday, Sept. 11.
