NEW ORLEANS -- The Washington State University men's cross country team is one of 147 institutions to be named a United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2011 Division I All-Academic Cross Country Team. The Cougar men join the women's team which also earned All-Academic status for the 2011 season.

The Cougar men's cross country team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.13 after the Fall 2011 semester. The WSU team, under the direction of third-year Head Coach Pete Julian, had an outstanding fall season with a fifth-place finish at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational, a fourth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in five years.

Members of the 2011 WSU men's cross country team who met the criteria for competition and were included in the team GPA included: Justin Englund (senior, Federal Way, Wash.), Lee George (redshirt freshman, Ferndale, Wash.), Andrew Gonzales (sophomore, Kennewick, Wash.), Drew Jordan (sophomore, Medford, Ore.), Andrew Kimpel (junior, Spokane), JonoLafler (senior, Maple Valley, Wash.), Richard Shroy (sophomore, Carson City, Nev.), Todd Wakefield (redshirt freshman, Australia), and Mack Young (sophomore, Redmond, Wash.). Kimpel was also selected as an individual to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team which was released Feb. 10.

"This is an exceptional group," Head Coach Pete Julian said. "For them to excel at the highest level in the classroom and for the men to compete in the national championships - that is a pretty rare thing. They met that standard of what we look for in a student athlete. I think it is fantastic what they did this past fall. It is everything we talk about, and they did it."

WSU is one of four Pac-12 Conference member schools to have a men's cross country teamearn USTFCCCA 2011 All-Academic status.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship in 2011.
