SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington State University's rowing team opened up its fall season by winning three out of five races against Gonzaga, Saturday at the Head of the Spokane Regatta at the Spokane River. WSU's second varsity eight posted the best time of the day, rowing a time of 23:35 for the 7,000 meter race.
"The second varsity eight and both novice boats had an outstanding day," said WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "Overall it was a successful day from a learning standpoint and we're excited to get back at it in a couple of weeks."
In the 7,000m varsity eight race, Gonzaga edged out WSU by five seconds, rowing a time of 23:52 to the Cougars 23:57. The Cougars second varsity eight easily won the three boat second varsity eight race with the time of 23:35. Washington State also won the novice eight race by 25 seconds.
In the 3,500m races Gonzaga was victorious in the varsity fours, six seconds ahead of WSU's second varsity four and eight seconds ahead of the Cougars top varsity four boat. The Cougars third novice eight crew defeated Gonzaga's crew by 17 seconds.
