EUGENE, Ore. -- - The Washington State women's rowing team won five of six races against Pacific-10 Conference foe Oregon State in a dual regatta Saturday at Lowell Park in Eugene.
With constant cross tail winds and rain, the Cougars will able to sweep the varsity crew races, winning the varsity four, varsity eight and second varsity eight races. The WSU novice squad captured victories in the second novice eight and novice four races.
"I thought we did a great job racing while dealing with the conditions," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "We learned a lot and are now more prepared and excited for our races next weekend in San Diego."
In the first race of the morning, the WSU varsity four "A" squad rowed a time of 7:18.9 to seal the victory. The WSU "C" crew finished third, 7:34.6, being barely edged out by the OSU crew, who finished with a time of 7:33.9. Finishing fourth was the WSU "B" crew with a time of 7:35.8.
WSU's varsity eight squad, who are ranked 18th in the US Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Preseason Poll, earned the victory in its race out rowing the Beavers by seven seconds. The Cougars completed the race with a time of 6:18.7, while the Beavers earned a mark of 6:25.4.
The Cougars completed the varsity sweep of the Beavers, with a win in the second varsity eight race. WSU's second varsity eight crew rowed to a time of 6:30.3, while the Beavers fell short with a time of 6:36.8.
In novice action, the Cougs earned wins in the second novice eight and novice four races. In the second novice eight race, WSU placed first with a 7.27.7 mark, while the Beavers completed the race with a time of 7:36.7. The Cougar novice four "B" squad captured victory in its race rowing the race with a time of 8:12.0. WSU "A" placed second, 8:12.7 barely edging out the Beaver crew, who placed third with a time of 8:14.1.
Oregon State earned its only victory of the day in the novice eight race with a time of 6:55.5. The WSU squad finished second, earning a mark of 7:01.1.
The Washington State women's rowing team will return to action April 3-4 at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego.
